The Vincent Dureuil Janthial estate in Rully: Côte Chalonnaise in the spotlight
Based in Rully, in the northern part of the Côte Chalonnaise, Domaine Dureuil-Janthial has established itself as the undisputed reference of its appellation and one of the great names of contemporary Burgundy. Across 20 hectares of vines spread between Rully, Mercurey, Puligny-Montrachet and Nuits-Saint-Georges, Céline and Vincent Dureuil craft a range of more than twenty single-parcel cuvées of remarkable purity and precision. Named Winemaker of the Year 2019 by La Revue du Vin de France, and hailed by Bettane et Desseauve as the supreme reference of the Côte Chalonnaise, Vincent Dureuil practices a demanding, peasant-style viticulture, conducted organically, with entirely hand-harvested grapes.
Together with his wife Céline, Vincent Dureuil carefully tends the 20 hectares of his vineyard (including 13 Ha of white Burgundy) located primarily in the Rully appellation, although the Dureuil Janthial estate also produces 2 red wines from Nuits St Georges, including 1 village wine and a Premier Cru Clos des Argillières, 1 red Mercurey and 2 excellent whites in Puligny Montrachet, including the village cuvée Corvée des Vignes and the Premier Cru les Champs Gains. Since 2009, the estate has been certified organic. The strength of the Dureuil Janthial estate, beyond Vincent Dureuil's exceptional winemaking skills, lies in its magnificent heritage of old vines, some of which are century-old, such as those of the Rully 1er Cru Meix Cadot Vieilles Vignes (planted in 1920 by Pierre Janthial, his great-grandfather). The vineyard is managed with respect for the terroir and nature, following the lunar calendar which guides the many tasks in the vineyard as well as the stages in the cellar. The quality of the juices is therefore superb, and the Dureuil Janthial estate receives glowing reviews from the professional press, which is thoroughly deserved. In the Dureuil Janthial estate's wine range, there are no fewer than 9 white Rully wines (including 6 Premier Cru cuvées, at the pinnacle of which sit Meix-Cadot, Margotés, and Grésigny), and no fewer than 6 red Rully wines including 3 Premier Cru cuvées (Chapitre, La Fosse, les Clous). In terms of wine ageing, Vincent Dureuil uses approximately 20 to 25% new barrels for the white Burgundies, and up to 35% for the red Burgundies. The aim is to accompany the wines without marking them with a dominant oakiness that could mask the aromatic purity of the grape variety and terroir. After one year of barrel ageing, the juice spends a few weeks back in the tank before bottling, which generally takes place at the very beginning of spring. Intensity, energy, and purity are the guiding principles of the Domaine Dureuil Janthial wines, with particularly aromatic whites that achieve a sovereign balance between acidity and minerality. The palates are frank, vibrant and mineral with great length. On the red side, the Dureuil Janthial wines are fresh and refined, with always precise fruit and a just balance that commands respect. One can truly say that at the Dureuil Janthial estate, the Côte Chalonnaise is at its very best, offering a remarkable quality-to-price ratio in Burgundy. Highly recommended…
