History of the estate Vieux Pressoir

Domaine du Vieux Pressoir is a viticultural gem nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley, a region renowned for its excellent wines. Founded over a century ago in 1892, this estate traces its origins back to an ancestral winemaking tradition. Throughout the decades, it has preserved its heritage while embracing innovation to produce exceptional quality wines.

In 1892, the history of the Domaine began with the acquisition of a few hectares of vineyards by Mr. Albert, near the town of Vaudelnay. Over the course of 120 years, Domaine du Vieux Pressoir has persevered and flourished, adapting its practices to the evolving techniques of harvesting and winemaking, while also gaining recognition for two major AOCs: Saumur in 1936 and Saumur – Puy Notre Dame in 2009.

After being in the hands of four generations of winemakers, the development of the Domaine has continued since 2015 under the leadership of Claude Vagnon and his family. This new era combines heritage and modernity, thus perpetuating the adventure initiated by the Albert family.

In 1892, the Albert family established a small vineyard in Vauldelnay, near Puy-Notre-Dame. This modest estate, initially consisting of a few hectares, specialized primarily in the production of white wines.

In 1936, the Saumur appellation (AOC) was officially recognized, encompassing still white (Chenin) and red (Cabernet Franc) wines. The Albert family estate fully embraced this new production.

In 1978, Mr. Bruno Albert took the reins of Domaine du Vieux Pressoir, representing the fourth generation to lead this family estate.

Finally, in 2015, a new chapter began in the history of Domaine du Vieux Pressoir with the arrival of Claude Vagnon and his family at its helm, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this emblematic estate.

Terroir, Vines, Appellations, and Winemaking

Nestled in the heart of Saumurois, Domaine du Vieux Pressoir benefits from an exceptional terroir that allows it to produce wines under the Saumur and Saumur – Puy Notre Dame appellations. The climatic conditions, natural characteristics of the landscape, and soil composition contribute to giving our wines a unique identity.

The Domain Terroir: Spanning 26 hectares, the estate is primarily planted with Chenin and Cabernet Franc on two distinct hillside terroirs: the Jurassic and Turonian terroirs. These two types of soil offer optimal drainage, thus promoting vine growth. The Jurassic terroir is characterized by hard limestone, flinty clay, and traces of quartz, while the superior Turonian terroir is composed of sandy-clayey chalk.

The Grape Varieties: The vineyard parcels are predominantly planted with Cabernet Franc and Chenin. Cabernet Franc, thriving on argilo-calcareous soils, gives rise to fruity and supple wines with excellent aging potential. Chenin, emblematic of the Loire Valley, stands out for its ability to reflect the minerality and character of its terroir, producing elegant white wines with floral and fruity aromas. The vineyard also houses Chardonnay, perfectly suited for sparkling wines and often used in blends with Chenin.

The Climate: Bathed in a mild and temperate climate influenced by the ocean, our vineyard enjoys optimal grape ripening. Furthermore, the climate limits the risk of frost, ensuring stable and high-quality production.

The Topography: The vineyards, planted at an average altitude of 80 meters, are protected from spring frosts. The Mauges massif, located 40 km west of Puy-Notre-Dame, plays a crucial role in limiting rainfall and promoting perfect grape ripening, harvested between September and October.

Viticultural Practices: Viticultural practices are guided by constant attention to quality. Pruning, bud removal, leaf thinning, and inter-row grassing are techniques implemented to ensure even grape distribution, maintain production potential, promote optimal ripening, and preserve vine health.

In summary, Domaine du Vieux Pressoir is committed to rigorous and environmentally friendly viticultural practices, offering exceptional wines that reflect the richness of its terroir.

The estate has just obtained its organic certification in 2024. Therefore, the estate will produce organic wines from the 2024 vintage!

The estate's Cuvees

Domaine du Vieux Pressoir offers a range of refined cuvees, each revealing the quintessence of the terroir and the expertise of its winemakers.

Cuvee Aliénor: Perfectly ripe grapes give this cuvee a remarkably soft and round texture. On the palate, aging in barrels brings toasted and vanilla notes that harmonize with the fruity richness of the wine.

Cuvee Les Silices: Les Silices is a light and fruity wine, ideal for moments of conviviality and sharing. Gentle and gradual winemaking extracts just enough from the grapes to achieve perfect balance, combining character and softness.

Cuvee Élégance: Crafted from the Chenin grape variety, Élégance is a floral and structured wine, revealing delicate fruitiness and remarkable aromatic complexity. Its harmonious aroma palette is dominated by notes of white flowers. On the palate, it is supple from the outset, then opens up to a generous and velvety texture, supported by subtle acidity that brings freshness and length to the finish.

Cuvee Origine: This Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame comes from a rigorous selection of parcels from our most prestigious terroirs. Cabernet Franc thus expresses all its aromatic complexity. This structured wine presents velvety tannins that allow intense aromas of red and black fruits to express themselves, with a persistent finish characteristic of great wines for aging.
