History of Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud

Emmanuel Darnaud's viticultural adventure began in 2001, marking a passionate transition from family orcharding to viticulture. This shift began modestly with the leasing of a 1.5-hectare plot in the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, situated to the south of Tain l'Hermitage. This first step marked the beginning of a considered and meticulous expansion of the estate.

Emmanuel's training alongside his father-in-law, the legendary winemaker Bernard Faurie, an emblematic figure of Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, forged his meticulous approach to viticulture. This defining influence shaped his viticultural philosophy, favouring precision and respect for the terroir.

The evolution of the estate reflects a constant and considered progression. In 2010, the acquisition of plots in Saint-Joseph, notably on the lieu-dit "La Dardouille", considerably enriched the estate's viticultural heritage. The year 2021 marked a decisive turning point with the taking over of Bernard Faurie's prestigious Hermitage vines on a lease, thereby consolidating the family legacy and the excellence of the estate.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud

The estate now extends over approximately 18 hectares, spread across three prestigious appellations of the northern Rhône Valley. In Crozes-Hermitage, the 16 hectares unfold over soils of glacial alluvium scattered with rounded pebbles, offering an ideal terroir for the expression of Syrah. These plots, distributed among La Roche de Glun, Pont de l'Isère and Mercurol, are home to vines aged 25 to 60 years, complemented by a precious half-hectare dedicated to white Crozes-Hermitage made from Marsanne.

The Saint-Joseph plots, covering 1.70 hectares, flourish on a south-east facing granite terroir. The lieu-dit "La Dardouille" in Tournon-sur-Rhône is home to venerable vines aged 30 to 90 years, part of which is devoted to the production of an exceptional white Saint-Joseph.

The Hermitage, the jewel of the estate acquired in 2021, covers 1.5 hectares spread across the mythical plots of Bessards, with its granite soils, and Greffieux, characterised by its glacial alluvium. These octogenarian vines represent an invaluable viticultural heritage, complemented by a plot dedicated to Marsanne for the production of white Hermitage.

Winemaking at Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud

Emmanuel Darnaud's winemaking philosophy is based on a meticulous plot-by-plot approach, respecting the identity of each terroir. For the red wines, manual harvesting is accompanied by rigorous sorting in the vineyard, retaining only the finest fruit. The plot-by-plot vinification, carried out in concrete or stainless steel vats, extends over 15 to 20 days, allowing optimal extraction of the grape's noble compounds. The partial use of whole-bunch fermentation, depending on the vintage, brings complexity and freshness to the wines. The élevage, tailored to each cuvée, takes place in barrels, demi-muids or vats, over a period ranging from 12 to 18 months.

The white wines receive equally meticulous attention. The gentle pressing of the juice using a pneumatic press preserves the aromatic finesse of the Marsanne. Fermentation and élevage, conducted in barrels or stainless steel vats for 12 months, allow the quintessence of each terroir to be expressed.

The Cuvées of Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud

Crozes-Hermitage Blanc

It reveals the full nobility of Marsanne on contrasting soils. The young vines of Pont de l'Isère combined with the fifty-year-old plants of Crozes-Hermitage give birth to a wine that unites aromatic richness and mineral freshness. The gentle extraction and precise twelve-month élevage shape a white wine of remarkable elegance.

Crozes-Hermitage "Mise en Bouche"

Sourced from young Syrah vines, it embodies indulgence and spontaneity. Its predominantly tank-aged élevage preserves the brilliance of the fruit and its vibrancy. This blended cuvée perfectly conveys the accessibility and immediate charm of the appellation.

Crozes-Hermitage "Les Trois Chênes"

It represents the emblem of the estate. The vines, aged 25 to 60 years and rooted in rounded pebbles, give birth to a structured wine in which richness is balanced by a delicate minerality. The wood élevage sculpts the tannins while preserving the wild, blood-like character of Syrah.

Crozes-Hermitage "Au Fil du Temps"

A single-plot selection from Les Saviaux, it expresses the full depth of thirty-year-old vines. The intensity and juiciness characteristic of this terroir refine with time, gradually giving way to a remarkable mineral expression.

Saint-Joseph Blanc

A confidential production of three barrels, it reveals the purity of Marsanne on granite. The thirty-year-old vines yield a wine with a long, linear structure, where tension and minerality combine with elegance.

Saint-Joseph "La Dardouille"

Sourced from a south-east facing hillside where vines aged 30 to 90 years plunge their roots into granite, this exceptional terroir gives birth to a wine of character, where the natural vigour of the site is tamed through an élevage in demi-muids and the judicious use of whole-bunch fermentation.

Hermitage Blanc

Sourced from vines aged 30 to 80 years on granite, it represents a rarity. The natural tension and freshness of the terroir express themselves freely, accompanied by a striking minerality that the élevage merely accompanies.

Hermitage Rouge

It represents the pinnacle of the estate. The blend of plots from Bessards and Greffieux, planted with octogenarian vines, gives birth to a wine of rare nobility. The élevage of more than 18 months in demi-muids, without new wood, respects the purity and finesse of this mythical terroir.

The exceptional terroirs of Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Hermitage resonate through the works of exceptional winemakers, true sculptors of northern Syrah. From the mythical cuvées of Alain Graillot, who redefined excellence in Crozes-Hermitage, to the deep and authentic wines of Bernard Faurie on the granite slopes of Hermitage, and the naturalistic approach of Dard et Ribo, each estate imprints its unique signature. The house of Chapoutier and Guigal perpetuate a centuries-old tradition of great wines, while Laurent Combier, François Villard, and Domaine du Colombier bring a measured modernity to their cuvées. The house of Delas and Jean-Michel Gérin complete this panorama of excellence, where each winemaker contributes to writing the great story of Rhône wines.

Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud embodies the excellence of wines from the northern Rhône Valley. The organic certification obtained in 2023 for Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, then in 2024 for Hermitage, confirms the estate's commitment to respectful and sustainable viticulture. Each cuvée bears witness to a precise and considered approach, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to discover the authentic expression of the great Rhône terroirs.
