Domaine Tour Saint Michel is one of the most charming and consistent family estates in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Founded in 1930 by Michel Fabre, it takes its name from the historic tower visible at the entrance to the property, which appears on all the labels. Located in the sunniest and warmest part of the appellation, in the south, on the emblematic terroirs of rounded galets, this 55-hectare estate — of which 30 to 35 hectares are under AOP Châteauneuf-du-Pape — is today run by three exceptional women: Mireille Fabre-Porte, daughter of Henri and Eliane Fabre, who has managed the vineyard since 2002 with a more modern vision while respecting family tradition, her daughter Magali (since 2018) and her second daughter Mélanie (since 2023). "Three women, three visions, one estate." In 2019, Mireille also created the négociant structure La Petite Tour, enabling the vinification of grapes from other appellations. From the 2020 vintage onwards, the estate has been transitioning to Organic Farming, certified HVE level 3. The wines, focused on finesse and roundness, favour the expression of fruit and terroir with very little use of oak.
Domaine Tour Saint Michel was founded in 1930 by Michel Fabre, who acquired his first vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and built the cellar beneath the historic tower that gives the estate its name. His son Henri Fabre took over and, with the help of his wife Eliane, progressively developed and expanded the vineyard to 40 hectares, of which 35 are in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The estate was then one of the discreet but solid properties of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine landscape. The true modernisation began in 2002 when Mireille, Henri and Eliane's daughter, took over the direction of the vineyard and embarked on a profound transformation of the estate's style and communication. She brought a more contemporary vision while respecting the family philosophy: expression of fruit, little oak, minerality of the pebbles.
It was truly from the 2007 vintage onwards that the wines of Tour Saint Michel took their current qualitative flight, with a progressive move upmarket and the creation of new prestige cuvées. In 2018, his daughter Magali joined the estate to assist her mother, followed by her daughter Mélanie in 2023. In 2019, Mireille created La Petite Tour, a négociant-vinificateur structure enabling the purchase of grapes from trusted growers to produce Cairanne, Ventoux and Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines under a distinct label. Since the 2020 vintage, the estate has been converting to Organic Agriculture, confirming its commitment to more environmentally responsible viticulture, already attested by its HVE level 3 certification.
The vineyard of Domaine Tour Saint Michel extends over 55 hectares, of which 30 to 35 hectares are in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The plots are principally located in the southern and central part of the appellation, on the most emblematic rounded pebble terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Vines are found in the quartiers of Gallimardes, Crouscroute, Petites Serres and Grand Coulet, on pure rounded pebble soils (Quaternary alluvial terraces of the Rhône). More recently, the estate has acquired new plots further north in the appellation, towards Terres Blanches, Brusquières and Fargueirol, terroirs with more clay-limestone soils that will bring greater freshness and minerality to the range in the coming vintages.
The grape variety selection is based on six of the thirteen varieties authorised in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC. For the reds: Grenache (dominant and opulent), Syrah (elegant, structure) and Mourvèdre (warm, ageing). For the whites: Grenache Blanc, Roussanne (aromatic) and Clairette (southern character, freshness). Harvesting is manual with double sorting in the vineyard and in the cellar, and total destemming. The vineyard has been in organic conversion since the 2020 vintage, with no chemical herbicides and mechanical soil cultivation.
Mireille Fabre-Porte's philosophy is clear and consistent: "we use very little wood in our cuvées, which we prefer to be expressive of the variety, the terroir and the vintage." Our barrel cellar is therefore limited in size. The bulk of vinification takes place in stainless steel or concrete vats, with ageing tailored to each cuvée. For the Cuvée Principale, ageing is entirely in vats, without any oak, to preserve the purity and freshness of the pebble fruit. For the Cuvée des Deux Soeurs, ageing takes place in a combination of vats, foudres and French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months, adding greater complexity without excessive oak influence. For Le Lien, ageing also takes place in vats and foudres. The whites are vinified after cold settling, in stainless steel vats at low temperature, then aged on lees in stainless steel to preserve their floral and fruity aromas. Mireille's feminine approach translates across all her wines into an emphasis on finesse and roundness, while always respecting the typicity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge (Cuvée Principale): The entry-level red cuvée and the estate's most classic expression. A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, sourced from the named sites Crouscroute, Grand Coulet, Petites Serres and Serres, on pure rounded pebble terroir. Aged in vats only, without oak. A ruby robe with violet hues, a generous nose of stewed red fruits and spices, a fleshy and powerful palate with silky tannins and a long aromatic persistence. A Châteauneuf of great consistency, which has improved markedly since the 2007 vintage.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Cuvée des Deux Soeurs: A prestige red cuvée, a tribute to Mireille's two daughters, Magali and Mélanie, who are progressively joining the estate. A blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 3% Mourvèdre and 2% Cinsault, from a parcel selection. Aged 12 to 14 months in a combination of vats, foudres and French oak barrels. Production of approximately 2,500 cases. A red wine of great complexity and fine depth, more structured and concentrated than the main cuvée, with aromas of dark fruits, spices and a melted oaky touch. A wine for ageing over 8 to 12 years.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Le Lien: A red cuvée paying tribute to former generations and to the family bond passed down from generation to generation since Michel Fabre in 1930. Sourced from 100% old Grenache vines on rounded pebble and clay terroir. Aged in vats and foudres. A red wine of exceptional concentration and purity thanks to the old vines: intense aromas of dark fruits, garrigue and liquorice, a full and silky palate, a long finish. The estate's most ambitious cuvée.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Cuvée du Lion: A confidential red cuvée, a tribute to the lion on the family coat of arms. Sourced from a parcel selection of the estate's finest vines. A powerful and ripe red wine, with aromas of candied dark fruits, coffee, prune and spices, with an ample and warm texture. "Indulgent and fruity through to the finish" according to tasters. A cuvée expressive of the sunniest pebble terroirs in the southern part of the appellation.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Feminessance: A red cuvée with a resolutely feminine accent, created by Mireille to celebrate the feminine dimension of the estate. A precise blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, in an elegant and silky style highlighting finesse and roundness. A red wine of fine harmony, accessible in its youth and capable of evolving over several years.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée des Deux Soeurs: A prestige white cuvée, the white counterpart to the Deux Soeurs range. A blend of 50% Roussanne, 30% Clairette and 20% Grenache Blanc, on rounded pebbles. Cold settling, vinification in stainless steel vats at low temperature, ageing on lees in stainless steel. A clear golden robe, a floral nose of citrus and exotic fruits, a fresh and mineral palate. "Brilliant and mineral" with a beautiful freshness. Ageing potential of 5 years.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc (Cuvée Principale): An entry-level white cuvée sourced from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Clairette, vinified in stainless steel vats to preserve the southern aromatic character and freshness. An expressive and fruity white wine, with notes of white flowers and white-fleshed fruits, a lively and refreshing palate. The estate's accessible and consistent white cuvée.
La Petite Tour (Cairanne, Ventoux, Châteauneuf-du-Pape): A négociant range created in 2019, sourced from grapes purchased from trusted growers and vinified at the estate. Cairanne, Ventoux and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are the three appellations currently covered under this distinct label. The same qualitative standards as the main estate, but allowing Mireille to explore other terroirs and offer wines at accessible prices. A fine way to discover the Tour Saint Michel style across peripheral appellations.
