Domaine de Villeneuve is one of the most singular and exciting addresses in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Confidential, artisanal and unclassifiable, this 8.5-hectare estate led by Stanislas Wallut is "a sincere and experimental winemaker who stands out within the Châteauneuf appellation." In a region renowned for its wines for connoisseurs, complex and with great ageing potential, Stan seeks above all to produce wines that are easy-drinking and approachable, without neglecting depth: "I never push, never." Infusion wines, always in pursuit of freshness and elegance, which can be considered natural wines: organic farming, indigenous yeasts, no oenological inputs, no added sulphur, no oak ageing, everything in concrete tanks to preserve the brilliance of the fruit. The estate takes its name from a small village located just past the bridge leading to Avignon. Acquired by Philippe du Roy de Blicquy and Stanislas Wallut in 1993, it passed in 2003 into the exclusive ownership of Stanislas.
Domaine de Villeneuve was the property of the Arnaux family until 1993, when Philippe du Roy de Blicquy and his associate Stanislas Wallut acquired it. At the time of purchase, the estate was in poor condition and required significant work, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Restoring the vines and the winemaking facilities would take several years. The first vintage truly representative of Stan's vision was 1995, the third vintage of the property under the new management. Ten years after the initial purchase, in 2003, Stanislas Wallut bought out his associate's shares and became the sole owner of the estate. He devoted himself to it entirely, developing his singular philosophy within the appellation.
Stanislas Wallut is an atypical figure in the Châteauneuf landscape: rather than seeking the power and concentration sometimes expected of this great appellation, he resolutely prioritises freshness, elegance and immediate drinkability. He is one of the rare winemakers in the appellation to champion a truly "natural" approach in the fullest sense of the term: organic farming, indigenous yeasts, no oenological inputs, zero added sulphur. Concrete tanks are his preferred tool, which he uses for both fermentations and ageing, thereby preserving the vivacity and fruit of the Grenache. One of his original initiatives was the creation of the Habemus Papam cuvée, financed through a pioneering crowdfunding campaign and aged in an egg-shaped concrete tank, produced in numbered magnums.
The vineyard of Domaine de Villeneuve covers 8.5 hectares, a deliberately modest surface area that allows Stanislas to tend each plot with the utmost care. The vines, averaging over 60 years old, are planted on the characteristic terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: rounded pebbles, sands and clays, across the appellation's principal zones. The encépagement comprises five grape varieties: Grenache (the dominant variety, the backbone of the estate), Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault and Clairette (a white variety incorporated into the red blends). The 80-year-old Grenache vines clearly dominate "the overall image" of the wines and bestow depth, expression and finesse at naturally low yields.
Organic farming has been practised for many years, with a deep respect for natural balances and biodiversity. Soil work is carried out manually and mechanically, without any herbicides or synthetic chemical products. Harvesting is done by hand with meticulous sorting. Yields are naturally low thanks to the age of the vines and a refusal of any productive maximisation.
Stanislas Wallut's cellar is the antithesis of conventional Châteauneuf winemaking: here, no barrels, no demi-muids, no foudres. Everything takes place in concrete tanks, for both fermentation and ageing. This decision is fundamental to Stan's philosophy: concrete, a neutral and naturally temperature-regulated material, preserves the brilliance of the fruit without imparting any oaky influence or deliberate oxidation. Fermentations start spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, without the addition of selected yeasts. No oenological inputs, no added sulphur. No destemming, whole-cluster harvesting.
The result of this approach is wines of remarkable purity and freshness for the appellation, which "shine through their depth of texture and silkiness, free from any heaviness." For the special cuvée Habemus Papam, Stanislas acquired an egg-shaped concrete tank, which allows natural micro-oxygenation and constant movement of the lees, favouring a particularly silky texture and an exceptional length on the palate.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge (Cuvée Principale / Les Vieilles Vignes) : The estate's principal red cuvée and its heart, made from a blend of 70% Grenache, 16% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, 4% Cinsault and 2% Clairette from 8.4 hectares of vines averaging over 60 years old. Fermentation and ageing entirely in concrete tanks, indigenous yeasts, no added sulphur, no filtration. A red wine of remarkable freshness and elegance for the appellation: aromas of black and red fruits, spices and garrigue, yet without heaviness or over-extraction. Voluminous and voluptuous palate, round, with a crunchy fruitiness. Depth of texture and silkiness characteristic of the estate. "Since the 1995 vintage, this estate has never disappointed." The estate reached a new level with the 2012 vintage, with an incredible texture.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge Habemus Papam : A special and ultra-confidential cuvée, born from a pioneering crowdfunding initiative that enabled Stanislas to acquire an egg-shaped concrete tank. Produced exclusively in numbered magnums, in the greatest vintages. A blend of 80% Mourvèdre and 20% Grenache, expressing a rare side of Mourvèdre in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Aged in an egg-shaped concrete tank. A red wine of exceptional concentration, silky texture and length, expressing the depth and spice of Mourvèdre intertwined with the roundness and fruitiness of Grenache. A collector's cuvée, produced in minute quantities.
Côtes du Rhône La Griffe (Rouge) : A red Côtes du Rhône cuvée, made from the estate's grapes outside the Châteauneuf appellation or from purchased fruit. "The most accessible, very fruity, fluid and easy-drinking, with crunchy red fruits, grenadine… a wine that will cause real carnage at your dinner table." The introductory cuvée to the Villeneuve universe, in a light, juicy and immediately approachable style. The everyday wine for convivial occasions, to be enjoyed chilled and without ceremony.
