Wines from Domaine Robert-Denogent: buy at the best price

Nestled in Fuissé, in the south of Burgundy in the Mâconnais, Domaine Robert-Denogent is one of the essential references for great Chardonnays of the region. A family estate founded at the beginning of the 20th century, this domaine of around ten hectares cultivated organically and biodynamically across some thirty plots is today led by brothers Antoine and Nicolas Robert, alongside their father Jean-Jacques. A recognised specialist of the great terroirs of Pouilly-Fuissé, Mâcon, Saint-Véran and Beaujolais, the estate produces elegant white wines, vinified without additives, aged at length on fine lees in oak barrels (sometimes up to 30 months), true icons of the Mâconnais and the ultimate expression of Burgundian Chardonnay.

History of Domaine Robert-Denogent

The history of Domaine Robert-Denogent begins at the start of the 20th century, when the Denogent family, originally from Fuissé at the heart of the Mâconnais, launched its winemaking activity. Andrée Robert, née Denogent, grandmother of Antoine and Nicolas, was farming five hectares of vines at that time. In that era, the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation had not yet been officially recognised, but Andrée already sensed the exceptional potential of these clay-limestone terroirs and the magic of the Chardonnay planted there.

In 1988 and then 1989, Jean-Jacques Robert, son of Andrée, took over the reins of the estate after studying law and oenology. He renamed the property Robert-Denogent in homage to his ancestors and gradually increased the size of the vineyard. In 2006, his eldest son Nicolas joined him, followed a few years later by Antoine. In 2015, the two brothers officially took over the estate and gave it a resolutely natural direction, while preserving the family values: authenticity, generosity and conviviality. The estate today farms approximately ten to thirteen hectares, including 1.5 hectares farmed organically on behalf of the Chauvet family, heirs of Jules Chauvet, the celebrated négociant and oenologist considered the founding father of natural wine.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Robert-Denogent

The vineyard of Domaine Robert-Denogent extends over some thirty fragmented plots across the south of Burgundy, principally around Fuissé and Solutré-Pouilly. The white wines are produced across six prestigious appellations of the Mâconnais: Mâcon-Fuissé, Mâcon-Solutré, Mâcon-Villages, Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Vinzelles and Saint-Véran. In addition, there is a 1.5-hectare plot in Beaujolais-Villages, at La Chapelle-de-Guinchay, which once belonged to Jules Chauvet, planted with Gamay.

The soils are predominantly clay-limestone and clay-schist, sometimes stony or rich in flint, offering a remarkable variety of expressions. The vines, averaging 50 to 70 years of age, with some of the most venerable reaching 90 years, are farmed using organic and biodynamic practices. The Robert brothers take care to preserve biodiversity through natural ground cover, to protect the vines from intense heat, and to tend the plants with a craftsman's approach: all vineyard work — winter pruning, ploughing, de-budding, lifting and trimming — is carried out by hand wherever possible, without the use of synthetic products.

Winemaking at Domaine Robert-Denogent

In the cellar, the philosophy of Domaine Robert-Denogent can be summed up in a few words: minimal intervention, great patience, and an absolute respect for the grape. The harvests, determined plot by plot according to ripeness, are entirely manual. Whole clusters of Chardonnay and Aligoté are pressed immediately, while the Gamay is placed in tank to macerate. Fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts, without any oenological inputs.

Each plot is then vinified separately, and the juices are distributed among a variety of containers chosen according to the characteristics of the terroir: oak barrels, demi-muids, large casks, concrete tanks, enamelled or stainless steel vats. The ageing, particularly lengthy, extends over a minimum of two winters and can reach 30 to 36 months on fine lees, without bâtonnage. The wines are lightly or not at all sulphited, unfiltered and unfined, bottled only when they have reached their full maturity. This patient, almost peasant-like approach gives birth to Chardonnays of uncommon finesse, tension and complexity.

The cuvées of Domaine Robert-Denogent

Mâcon-Villages Les Sardines: a fresh and juicy cuvée sourced from clay-limestone soils, vinified without sulphur and unfiltered. Aged for 19 months between tank and wood, this 100% Chardonnay is taut, with a fine acidity that sharpens the palate — a perfect signature of the Robert brothers.

Mâcon-Solutré: a village Chardonnay sourced from the renowned terroir of Solutré, this wine offers a floral and fruity nose, a balanced and persistent palate, in a fresh and expressive style.

Mâcon-Fuissé Les Tâches: a single-plot cuvée of a lovely pale gold, with an expressive nose of exotic fruits (roasted pineapple, mango), a broad and rich palate supported by a fine tension and a remarkable length.

Saint-Véran Les Pommards: a Saint-Véran sourced from a plot called Les Pommards. The wine stands out for its finesse, its aromas of white fruits, its fine minerality and its freshness, in keeping with the most precise cuvées of the estate.

Pouilly-Fuissé La Croix: the estate's flagship cuvée, sourced from Chardonnay plots averaging 50 years of age on silty and schistous soils. Manual harvesting, fermentation and malolactic in 228-litre barrels, ageing on fine lees for 18 to 30 months without bâtonnage. The wine unfolds a powerful mineral backbone, roundness and a long finish, on a par with the greatest Pouilly-Fuissé.

Pouilly-Fuissé La Croix Vieilles Vignes: a more mature version of La Croix, sourced from very old vines. An intense golden colour, a slight turbidity due to the absence of filtration, aromas oscillating between apricot, white peach, candied citrus and almond. A pure, fleshy and stylish Chardonnay, with a saline and persistent finish.

Pouilly-Fuissé Le Carron: the estate's Monopole on the commune of Fuissé, sourced from very old 90-year-old vines planted on shallow, very stony clay soils with flint or chailles. A Chardonnay built for long ageing, rich, sunlit and solidly structured, considered one of the estate's most accomplished cuvées.

Pouilly-Fuissé Cuvée Claude Denogent Vieilles Vignes: a tribute cuvée to the founding father, sourced from old vines. A deep golden colour, an intense nose of orange peel, exotic fruits and honey, a dense, dry, rich palate endowed with fine richness and a balance typical of the Mâconnais.

Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Les Reisses: a great cuvée born from old vines of more than 60 years planted over 0.50 hectares on deep clay soils. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts, ageing of at least two years in barrels on fine lees. A complex nose of white flowers, yellow-fleshed fruits and citrus, evolving towards toasted almond, acacia honey and brioche. A broad, structured palate built for extended ageing.

Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Vers Cras: an emblematic Premier Cru of the appellation, this Pouilly-Fuissé embodies the excellence of its terroir. The wine reveals a rich and complex nose, a dense palate supported by a chiselled mineral backbone and a remarkably long finish.

Pouilly-Vinzelles: a more confidential cuvée sourced from the neighbouring appellation of Pouilly-Vinzelles. The Chardonnay here expresses a pure and upright profile, marked by citrus fruits, white flowers and a fine saline minerality.

Beaujolais-Villages Cuvée Jules Chauvet: the estate's only red cuvée, this 100% Gamay Beaujolais-Villages is sourced from plots that once belonged to Jules Chauvet, the tutelary figure of natural wine. The wine presents a distinctive character, with aromas of spices, dark fruits, smoke and cherry stones, in an uncompromising, lively style faithful to the spirit of Chauvet.
