Nestled in Morey-Saint-Denis, in the heart of the prestigious Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, Domaine Taupenot-Merme is an essential reference for the great wines of the Côte d'Or. Born in 1963 from the marriage of Jean Taupenot, originally from Saint-Romain, and Denise Merme, heiress to a long line of winegrowers from Morey, the estate is today run by their children Romain and Virginie Taupenot, the ninth generation at the helm of this family property. Spread over just over 13 hectares between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, the estate produces around twenty appellations, including four emblematic Grands Crus (Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Clos des Lambrays and Corton), all cultivated under certified organic farming.
The history of Domaine Taupenot-Merme is rooted in two Burgundian winegrowing families whose origins date back to the mid-17th century. On the Merme side, the lineage has been firmly established in Morey-Saint-Denis since 1650, making it one of the oldest winegrowing families in the village. On the Taupenot side, the roots reach back to Saint-Romain, in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune. The current estate was born in 1963, when Jean Taupenot married Denise Merme, bringing together two precious parcel portfolios and the two emblematic slopes of Burgundy, the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.
The estate was born from the historic division of Domaine Merme, the other branch having given rise to the Perrot-Minot family, also renowned in Morey-Saint-Denis. At the end of the 1990s, Romain and Virginie Taupenot, brother and sister, took over the family estate together. From the outset, they instilled a new vision oriented towards freshness, purity and respect for the fruit, while perpetuating the long tradition passed down from generation to generation. Under their leadership, quality progressed considerably, and within two decades the estate became one of the most respected references on the Côte de Nuits. Since 2001, the vineyard has been farmed organically, with official certification obtained in 2023.
The vineyard of Domaine Taupenot-Merme extends over just over 13 hectares, spread across some twenty prestigious appellations. More than 11 hectares are devoted to Pinot Noir, with the remainder planted in Chardonnay and Aligoté. This mosaic of climats embraces the most emblematic villages of Burgundy: Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis (a direct neighbour of Clos de Tart and Clos des Lambrays), Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges on the Côte de Nuits, as well as Auxey-Duresses, Saint-Romain and Corton on the Côte de Beaune.
The estate cultivates four Grand Crus: Charmes-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Clos des Lambrays and Corton Le Rognet. The vines average over 40 years of age, yielding concentrated and expressive berries. Since 2001, the entire vineyard has been farmed organically, without the use of synthetic chemicals, in order to preserve soil life and biodiversity. Yields are deliberately limited to favour concentration and allow each climat to express its typicity in the glass.
In the cellar, Romain Taupenot approaches his winemaking with a non-interventionist philosophy, in absolute respect for the fruit and the terroir. Harvesting is entirely manual, followed by rigorous sorting of the berries to retain only perfectly ripe and healthy grapes. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, without the addition of oenological inputs. Extractions are deliberately gentle in order to preserve the aromatic finesse and delicacy of the Pinot Noir.
The wines are aged in French oak barrels tailored to each cuvée, with a sparing use of new wood so as never to mask the magnificent fruit offered by the old vines. Romain Taupenot seeks the perfect balance between finesse and intensity, without over-extraction or excess alcohol. The result is wines of great aromatic purity, endowed with a silky tannic structure, beautiful acidity and superb ageing potential. The Taupenot-Merme cuvées are regularly acclaimed by Wine Advocate, Burghound, Decanter and the Revue du Vin de France.
