Wines from Domaine Bosquet des Papes: buy at the best price

Domaine Bosquet des Papes is one of the most respected and most representative estates of the great Châteauneuf-du-Pape tradition. Founded in 1860 by Emmanuel Boiron, who invested in his first hectares of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate has been passed down from father to son over five generations, each one expanding the vineyard while preserving the founding philosophy: producing age-worthy wines in the purest Châteauneuf tradition. It was Maurice Boiron, the fourth generation, who renamed the estate "Bosquet des Papes" in 1966, bringing the vineyard to 27 hectares. His son Nicolas Boiron joined the estate in 1995 and took over its management in 2004 when his father retired. Advised by the brilliant oenologist Philippe Cambie, Nicolas has put his own stamp on the estate while respecting the family heritage, using a blend of large oak casks and demi-muids for ageing. Today, he runs the estate alongside his wife Jeanne-Claire. The vineyard spans 32 hectares (including 3.5 hectares in Côtes du Rhône) spread across approximately 40 plots, with an average vine age of 50 years.

History of Domaine Bosquet des Papes

The history of Bosquet des Papes begins in 1860 with the first viticultural investments of Emmanuel Boiron in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. His son Joseph-Victor, then his grandson Joseph, followed in his footsteps and progressively developed the estate, eventually creating the "Clos Chantemerle", whose name came from the song of the blackbird in the vines. In 1936, subsequent generations continued to expand and care for the property, with a steadfast commitment to terroir and quality of production. Maurice Boiron, Joseph's son, contributed to the growth of the estate by acquiring more than ten additional hectares, and in 1966 gave the estate its definitive identity by renaming it "Bosquet des Papes". The family heritage then comprised 27 hectares of vines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.

In 1995, Nicolas Boiron, Maurice's son, joined his father at the estate. They worked together until 2004, when Maurice retired and handed over the reins to Nicolas. The latter draws on the expertise of the great oenologist Philippe Cambie to refine the vinifications, progressively introducing demi-muids alongside the traditional foudres. Nicolas runs the estate alongside his wife Jeanne-Claire, and two of their daughters already intend to take over, ensuring the continuity of the sixth generation. The wines of Bosquet des Papes have earned a solid international reputation, with consistently high scores from leading American critics and a strong presence in the world's finest restaurants.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Bosquet des Papes

The Bosquet des Papes vineyard covers a total of 32 hectares, including 27.5 hectares dedicated to the production of red Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 1.5 hectares of white, complemented by 3.5 hectares under the Côtes du Rhône appellation. This vast vineyard is spread across around 40 different plots covering the entire territory of the appellation, offering a remarkable diversity of terroirs. The soils range from the rounded pebbles (quartzite and sandstone) characteristic of La Crau and the western plateau, to the lighter sands and clays to the north-east, as well as areas of red soils and broken limestone. Among the most notable plots is the lieu-dit La Gardiole, from which the cuvée À la Gloire de mon Grand-Père is sourced, and the 3.5 hectares of very old vines of around 100 years dedicated to the Chante le Merle cuvée.

The grape varieties are dominated by Grenache noir, the principal and structuring variety of the appellation. The complementary varieties are Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which contribute colour, finesse and body to the blends respectively. The average age of the vines is 50 years across the entire vineyard, with centenary plots dedicated to the Chante le Merle cuvée. All harvests are done by hand, with rigorous sorting both in the vineyard and in the winery.

Vinifications of Domaine Bosquet des Papes

The philosophy of Nicolas Boiron is rooted in the great Châteauneuf tradition: to produce structured wines, designed for long cellaring, which reveal their full complexity after several years of ageing. Fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, without destemming for the traditional cuvées (whole-bunch harvest). Macerations last between 15 and 25 days depending on the vintage. Ageing takes place in a combination of oak foudres (traditional) and demi-muids (more recently introduced through the influence of Philippe Cambie), for 12 to 24 months depending on the cuvée. For the great Chante le Merle cuvée, ageing is carried out 80–85% in demi-muids and 15–20% in foudres, for 12 to 18 months. For the À la Gloire de mon Grand-Père cuvée, ageing is carried out 80% in demi-muids and 20% in foudres.

The Cuvées of Domaine Bosquet des Papes

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition (Red): Entry-level red cuvée and gateway to the world of Bosquet des Papes, sourced from a blend of Grenache (dominant), Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre from the estate's various plots. Fermentation in concrete vats, ageing in large oak vats. Balanced and flavoursome red wine, "without artifice", with aromas of red fruits, spices and garrigue, a harmonious palate and appreciable length. A classic and accessible Châteauneuf-du-Pape, reflecting the terroir and the Boiron family's expertise. 92/100 for the 2019 vintage.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Patrimoine (Red): Intermediate red cuvée of the estate, sourced from a selection of older plots, expressing the typicity and depth of Châteauneuf's terroirs. Blend of Grenache and complementary varieties, with ageing in large oak vats and demi-muids. Red wine of beautiful structure and aromatic complexity superior to the Tradition, with increased ageing potential. Regularly cited by specialist guides as one of the estate's best value-for-money cuvées.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape À la Gloire de mon Grand-Père (Red): Prestigious red cuvée, a tribute to Nicolas Boiron's grandfather, sourced primarily from the lieu-dit La Gardiole. A blend of almost 100% Grenache from the sands and clays of the northern part of the appellation. Aged 80% in demi-muids and 20% in large oak vats. Deep colour with purple hues, breathtaking nose of black cherry, blackberry, ripe strawberries, candied flowers, orange blossom and toasted spices. Palate with a slight tannic firmness in its youth, built to age for several years. One of the estate's most sought-after cuvées internationally.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes (Red): The great red cuvée of the estate and one of the most celebrated Châteauneuf-du-Papes in the appellation, sourced from a unique 3.5-hectare plot whose Grenache vines are over 100 years old. The name "Chante le Merle" is directly inherited from the estate's original name "Clos Chantemerle". Fermentation in concrete vats with whole clusters, ageing for 12 to 18 months with 80–85% in demi-muids and 15–20% in large oak vats. Wine of incomparable concentration, depth and sumptuousness: intense red colour with violet hues, elegant and complex nose, very aromatic, elegant and long palate. A collector's wine for long cellaring, not to be touched before a minimum of 8 to 10 years. Produced only in the greatest vintages. Among the finest vintages: 1990, 1998, 2000, 2007, 2010, 2016, 2019.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Folie (Red): Experimental and bold red cuvée from the estate, whose name evokes the creative madness of Nicolas Boiron. Sourced from a selection of plots and vinified in a particular way, in a more concentrated and more oak-influenced style than the other cuvées. Powerful and opulent red wine, for lovers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a modern and expressive style.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Tradition: White cuvée made from Bourboulenc and Clairette, the two main white grape varieties of the estate, from 1.5 hectares of vines. Powerful and aromatic white wine, with notes of apple, peach and white flowers, an ample palate and fine minerality. A gastronomic white, rarer than the estate's reds, to be enjoyed with noble fish or aged cheeses.

Côtes du Rhône (Red): Cuvée sourced from the 3.5 hectares of vines under the Côtes du Rhône appellation, in the estate's typical style: fruity and generous, approachable in its youth, with a fine tension and characteristic Rhône freshness. The everyday wine of Bosquet des Papes, to enjoy the Boiron family style at a more accessible price.
