« Les Grands Vins d'Alsace à Maturité » : discover the report by Didier Frayssou of our Oenoschool tasting of 17 October 2016 and benefit from our opinions on 9 white wines from Alsace among the greatest producers and the greatest crus.
Zind Humbrecht Cuvée Zind VDT 2005 (Chardonnay Auxerrois) **
A golden, old gold robe and a complex nose: honey, quinces, exotic fruits, candied lemons. The palate is warm, marked by alcohol, with residual sugar. The finish is bitter.
Etienne Loew Alsace Muscat Marnes Vertes 2005 **(*)
An intense, golden robe. A floral (rose), vegetal nose with notes of white fruits. The palate is quite long with a lovely acidity, freshness and little bitterness. Some slightly spiced and vegetal notes… an atypical but pleasant wine.
Agathe Bursin Sylvaner Eminence 2007 (old vines planted on the Grand Cru Zinnkoepfle) **(*)
The robe is golden with orange highlights. The nose is original for a Sylvaner (candied fruits, quince). The palate has a lovely acidity with a slight residual sugar. The length is relatively short.
Zind Humbrecht Alsace Riesling Clos Windsbuhl 2011 ***(*)
A barely evolved robe, a nose of candied citrus, lemongrass… The wine is dry on the palate, straight, mineral and a little closed.
Ostertag Riesling Grand Cru Munchberg 2008 ****(*)
A golden robe. A nose of candied citrus with some notes of hydrocarbons. On the palate one finds apricots, citrus, grape skin. A big acidity and a significant concentration… A very fine bottle!
Weinbach Alsace Pinot Gris Cuvée Sainte Catherine 2002 ****
An evolved robe and a complex nose with smoky aromas, pepper, menthol and spices. The palate is marked by an acidic framework that balances a slight residual sugar without bitterness. A very fine wine that is both powerful and refined.
Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Laurence 2001 ****
An old gold robe with orange highlights. A nose of rose, caramel and butter. The palate is consistent with the nose, with a good acidity that balances the sugar. The finish is straight and clean.
Ostertag Riesling Grand Cru Munchberg 2007 VT ****(*)
A tangy nose of green apples and citrus. The palate reveals a lovely acidity for this off-dry wine with a very refreshing finish.
Marcel Deiss Alsace Grand Cru Gewurztraminer Altenberg de Bergheim 1988 SGN ***
A copper-hued robe, a very fine nose of bitter oranges, mushrooms and pineapple. The palate is very rich, quite heavy with a finish full of bitterness. Even a present acidity cannot manage to make this wine digestible…
