During a major stocktake of the bottles stored in the estate's cellars, an intern at Bollinger discovered vintages that had been buried for years!
In 2010, during an inventory, an intern discovered a small room located beneath the home of Madame Bollinger. Inside were old dusty crates and empty bottles, abandoned for years.
However, at the end of August 2012, during a second inventory carried out at the request of cellar master Gilles Descôtes, another intern uncovered, behind the crates stored in that now-famous room, full bottles of Champagne!
On certain racks, the following inscriptions could be made out: Aÿ 1914, Verzenay 1894, Le Mesnil 1912… At the back of this room, bottles were discovered that appeared particularly old, bearing the notation "CB 14". The estate's archives revealed that this was a disgorgement code dating from 1830 (Bollinger was founded in 1829)!
The estate then set about restoring the bottles that were still full: replacing the cork, topping up the levels…
This discovery is part of the initiative launched by Gilles Descôtes to catalogue and promote these old bottles kept in the vast cellars of Bollinger.
One thing is certain — this discovery is surely not the last!
