History of Château Duhart-Milon

The history of Château Duhart-Milon dates back to the early 18th century, when grapes from the Milon vines were used to produce the second wine of Château Lafite. At the time, the estate was already part of the winegrowing holdings of the de Ségur family, which owned several prestigious estates in Pauillac. Under the leadership of Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, nicknamed "the Prince of the Vines" by Louis XV, the vineyard gained renown.

In 1855, during the famous Médoc wine classification, Duhart-Milon was recognized as the only Fourth Growth in the commune of Pauillac, a testament to the exceptional quality of its terroir. However, a period of instability began in the early 20th century. The estate changed hands several times, and the quality of its wines gradually declined. It was not until 1962, when the Rothschild family acquired Duhart-Milon, that the estate began a true revival. Under their management, major work was undertaken to restore the vines, modernize the facilities, and return Duhart-Milon to its place among Bordeaux’s great wines.

Today, the estate is still owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite and continues to be run with a commitment to excellence. With Saskia de Rothschild at its helm since 2017, Duhart-Milon has embraced a sustainable approach, notably undertaking the conversion of its vineyards to organic farming.

The 2009 vintage of Château Duhart-Milon received a score of 97/100 from Robert Parker, highlighting the elegance and finesse of this Pauillac favored by connoisseurs.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Château Duhart-Milon

Château Duhart-Milon benefits from an exceptional Left Bank terroir in one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after areas: Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc. The estate’s 76 hectares of vines are planted on fine gravel soils mixed with windblown sands over a limestone substratum, characteristics that give the wines their distinctive character and complexity.

The vineyard is planted with two main grape varieties: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. This choice is perfectly suited to Duhart-Milon’s cool terroir, particularly its northern exposure, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and produces wines that are both powerful and elegant. The vines average 30 years of age, and yields are limited to ensure optimal flavor concentration and high-quality fruit.

Meticulous work is carried out throughout the year to maintain the quality of the vineyard. The estate regularly undertakes drainage work, replants vines, and purchases neighboring plots to consolidate its terroir. Each plot is vinified separately to preserve its distinctive characteristics and select only the best lots for the wines.

Winemaking at Château Duhart-Milon

Winemaking at Château Duhart-Milon is a rigorous process that combines tradition and modernity. The estate recently modernized its facilities, building new cellars and a modern vat room in 2020. This infrastructure allows for plot-by-plot vinification, providing optimal control over wine quality.

The grapes are harvested by hand to select the best fruit. Once picked, they are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the freshness and purity of their aromas. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in tanks to ensure greater finesse.

The wines of Château Duhart-Milon are then aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new. Barrel aging adds to the wines’ complexity and elegance without masking the characteristics of the terroir. Thanks to this precise approach, Duhart-Milon’s wines reveal fine tannic structure and a perfect balance of power and finesse.

The Cuvées of Château Duhart-Milon

Château Duhart-Milon produces two main cuvées: its fine wine, Château Duhart-Milon, and its second wine, Moulin de Duhart. Each expresses the unique character of this exceptional estate.

Château Duhart-Milon

The fine wine of Château Duhart-Milon is often described as a classic example of the Pauillac appellation. Made from the estate’s oldest vines, it stands out for its great depth and aromatic intensity. Critics regularly praise its aromas of ripe dark fruit, cedar, and tobacco, as well as its firm tannic structure, which gives it excellent aging potential.

Château Duhart-Milon is a serious wine that can be enjoyed after several years in the cellar. Wine lovers particularly appreciate its ability to evolve over time, developing more complex notes of undergrowth, leather, and spice over the decades.

Moulin de Duhart

Moulin de Duhart is the estate’s second wine, made from Duhart-Milon’s younger vines. Although a second wine, it receives the same attentive care as its elder sibling, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Aged in barrels for a shorter period, Moulin de Duhart is softer and more approachable while retaining fine structure and refined balance.

This wine delights with aromas of crisp red fruit, supple tannins, and a silky finish. It is ideal for drinking relatively young but also has good aging potential.

Pauillac, one of the Médoc’s most prestigious appellations, ranks among Bordeaux’s great wines, with remarkable vintages that have made history. Among the finest are 1975, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990, renowned for their complexity and longevity. The 1995, 1996, 2000, 2003, and 2005 vintages also stand out for their richness and power. More recently, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 have confirmed Pauillac’s exceptional potential, producing wines that are both elegant and powerful, and ideal for long-term cellaring.
