This domaine de Bédarrides has belonged to the BRUNIER family since the end of the 19th century, and the 5th and 6th generations are at the helm of this estate of more than 100 hectares in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. The domaine produces the Vieux Télégraphe cuvée (52 Ha of red from a single block, and 6 Ha of white) in the Crau sector, highly renowned for its rounded pebbles resting on a thick layer of clay. This cuvée, based on old vines of around 70 years (65% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 5% Cinsault and other grape varieties), represents the estate's flagship cuvée, and it can be said that even though its production is approximately 200,000 bottles per year, it is considered of very high quality.
Its aging is guaranteed for 25 years in great vintages, and it suffices to taste a vintage such as 1998 to be convinced that it is indeed a very great wine for cellaring. Vieux Télégraphe blanc is composed of 40% Clairette, 25% Grenache Blanc, 25% Roussanne and 10% Bourboulenc. More focused on floral than fruity aromas, it is characterized by a remarkable balance and freshness. It is however preferable to drink it before 4 years of age, or to let it age for 8 years and more in great vintages. Its production is approximately 25,000 bottles per year. The domaine also produces other cuvées of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, including the cuvée "Piedlong" (11 ha), which is located on the stony plateau of Piedlong with a small section on Pignan: it is composed of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, and delivers a rich yet fresh finish accompanied by a beautiful minerality. Another cuvée in the range: "Télégramme" (across 30 ha) composed of the estate's vines under 30 years old and also located outside the "La Crau" and "Piedlong" sectors. A more accessible Châteauneuf when young, and more supple. The last cuvée is the "Clos de la Roquette" blanc, 3 ha on the lieu-dit la Roquette (composed in equal thirds of Roussanne, Clairette and Grenache Blanc), with a production of 14,000 bottles intended to be consumed within 4 years of the vintage. The domaine du Vieux Télégraphe produces beautiful wines, and while the red wines are highly regarded and receive excellent scores from international critics, they deserve to be sought out by enthusiasts who will nonetheless need to exercise patience to enjoy them at their peak. The prices and quality of Vieux Télégraphe wines are comparable to those of Beaucastel.
