Wines from Domaine Marquis d'Angerville: buy at the best price!

Created in 1804, the Angerville estate only became property of the Angerville family a century later in 1906. It was to Marquis Sem d'Angerville that we owe the decision to bottle Burgundy wines in 1920, and he contributed greatly to the establishment of AOCs during the 1930s. His son Jacques took over the estate in 1952 and would vinify 52 harvests at Domaine Marquis d'Angerville. Most recently, Guillaume d'Angerville succeeded his father in 2003, and is now at the head of the property, converted to Biodynamics since 2006. The 15 hectares of vineyards are distributed very tightly south of Pommard and north of Meursault (with a very large majority located in Volnay).

History of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

The history of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville begins in 1507, when the Clos des Ducs, then property of the Dukes of Burgundy, is mentioned in a royal inventory. This historic vineyard, located in the heart of Volnay, is acquired in 1804 by Baron du Mesnil, marking the beginning of the family saga. His son, Eugène du Mesnil, inherits the estate and passes to his nephew, Sem, Marquis d'Angerville, a property devastated by the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century. In 1906, Sem undertakes the reconstruction of the vineyard, replanting fine Pinot Noir varieties, notably the famous "Pinot d'Angerville" clone, recognized for its exceptional quality. A pioneer of estate bottling, Sem also contributes to the creation of INAO, guaranteeing the authenticity of Burgundy appellations.

In 1952, Jacques d'Angerville takes over, vinifying 52 vintages and consolidating the estate's worldwide reputation. An influential figure, he presides over several wine institutions and contributes to the classification of Burgundy crus. Upon his passing in 2003, his son Guillaume, sixth generation, takes the reins. Trained in oenology and inspired by family values, Guillaume converts the estate to biodynamics from 2006, completing this transition in 2009. Today, supported by a passionate team led by François Duvivier, Domaine Marquis d'Angerville continues to shine as an essential Burgundy reference.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

The Domaine Marquis d'Angerville extends over 16.5 hectares, primarily in Volnay, including 11.5 hectares of Volnay Premier Cru, representing 12% of the appellation's Premiers Crus. The vines, planted on marly-limestone soils, benefit from ideal south-east exposure and elevation that promotes optimal drainage. These conditions, combined with the shallow depth of the soils, force the roots to plunge deep, capturing the quintessence of the terroir. The Clos des Ducs, a historic Monopole of 2.15 hectares, is the estate's jewel, with its limestone, stony, and clayey soil, offering wines of rare complexity.

Beyond the Clos des Ducs, the estate cultivates prestigious parcels such as Caillerets, Champans, Taillepieds, Fremiet, Mitans, Pitures, and Clos des Angles, each expressing a unique facet of the Volnay terroir. Regional appellations, such as Bourgogne Rouge, Bourgogne Blanc, Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, and Bourgogne Aligoté, complete this portfolio, along with parcels in Meursault 1er Cru Santenots and Pommard 1er Cru Combes-Dessus. The conversion to biodynamics reinforces soil vitality, using natural preparations such as horn manure and silica, applied according to the lunar calendar, for more resistant vines and grapes of exceptional quality.

Vinifications at Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Vinification at Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is based on a philosophy of terroir respect and minimalism, aimed at revealing the purity of the grapes. Harvesting, exclusively manual, is decided after rigorous monitoring of grape maturity, ensuring optimal balance. The bunches, harvested in small crates, are meticulously sorted and completely destemmed before fermentation. Cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes natural fermentation of 15 to 18 days, with controlled temperature rise (30-32°C maximum). Gentle extraction, favoring pumping over punching down, preserves noble tannins and color stability.

The wines are then lowered by gravity into oak barrels, with a limited proportion of new wood (20% for Premiers Crus) to preserve the delicacy of aromas. Malolactic fermentation takes place in spring or summer, followed by 18 months of aging in barrels, adjusted according to the vintage. Before bottling, wines are assembled in tanks for harmonization, with fining or filtration only if necessary. The estate remains faithful to cork closure, collaborating with Trescases for rigorous quality control. This non-interventionist approach guarantees pure, elegant wines faithful to their terroir.

The Cuvées of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay 1er Cru - Clos des Ducs

This 2.15-hectare Monopole, situated on a steep limestone slope, produces the estate's grand vin. Complex and harmonious, it offers ample aromas of rose, cherry, and redcurrant, with a firm and elegant structure. A wine for aging par excellence, it reaches its peak after 10 years, or more for great vintages.

Volnay 1er Cru - Caillerets

From two parcels totaling 0.46 hectares, this wine combines finesse and power on poor, reddish soil. Its distinctive minerality intertwines with fruity notes, offering typically Volnay elegance. Ideal after 5 to 10 years of cellaring, this cru captivates with its remarkable bouquet.

Volnay 1er Cru - Champans

With 3.98 hectares, this emblematic cru expresses generosity and finesse. Its soils, poorer at the top of the slope and clayey at the bottom, yield an ample wine with aromas of plum, licorice, and spices. More accessible earlier than others, it fully develops after 5 to 10 years.

Volnay 1er Cru - Clos des Angles

This 1.07-hectare climat produces a delicate wine marked by bright red fruits. Less stony, its soil imparts natural elegance, ideal after a few years in bottle, perfect for lovers of fine and accessible wines.

Volnay 1er Cru - Fremiet

On 1.57 hectares, this marly-limestone cru offers a structured, smooth, and fruity wine with a saline touch on the finish. Located near Pommard, it remains faithful to the Volnay style and gains brilliance after a few years of aging.

Volnay 1er Cru - Mitans and Pitures

These two parcels (0.96 hectares total) are blended to create an early-drinking and balanced Volnay Premier Cru. The fruity aromas and harmonious structure make it a versatile wine, drinkable young or kept for over 10 years.

Volnay 1er Cru - Taillepieds

On 1.07 hectares, this high-altitude cru produces a refined wine with a serious and elegant structure. Its poor, stony soil imparts a unique finesse, often requiring lengthy aging to reveal its complex bouquet.

Volnay Village - Grandchamps and Pluchots

From two parcels totaling 0.5 hectares, this harmonious cuvée, without new wood, offers freshness and vivacity. Vinified with the same care as the Premiers Crus, it captivates with its spirited character after a few years.

Meursault 1er Cru - Santenots

This white wine from 1.05 hectares, planted with Chardonnay, expresses the minerality of the marly terroir. Dry, fruity, with notes of hazelnut, it offers remarkable tension and can be enjoyed young or cellared.

Pommard 1er Cru - Combes-Dessus
