Domaine Charles Joguet in the Loire: great wines from Chinon
In 1957, Charles Joguet, who was a painter and sculptor, inherited the family property and created Domaine Charles JOGUET, located in Sazilly, 5 km east of Chinon. The estate has been certified organic since 2008!
His associate Jacques Genet ultimately took over half of the domaine in 1985, then purchased the remainder in 1997, allowing Charles Joguet to return to his original passion: painting and sculpture. In 2006, his daughter Anne-Charlotte Genet and a partner, Kevin Fontaine, joined the domaine, which then parted with 6 hectares of vines located on sandy soils, acquiring an equivalent 6 hectares on a more qualitative clay-limestone terroir. Domaine Charles Joguet stands at the pinnacle of the Chinon appellation, and its level of excellence rests above all on 3 outstanding cuvées that have consecrated the domaine's reputation: the Clos de la Dioterie (2 ha of 80-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils, northeast-facing, located in Sazilly), the Clos du Chêne Vert (2 ha located within the town of Chinon), and Les Varennes du Grand Clos (4.5 hectares in Sazilly). These terroirs with exceptional potential ensure an enviable position for Domaine Charles Joguet, and one can only acknowledge that the quality level of the wines is remarkable given the scale of the domaine. Congratulations to the team responsible for the winemaking and the vines, who have succeeded in promoting a spirit of freshness in great Cabernet Franc wines, offering Chinon wonderful fruity and floral aromas ranging from wild strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant through to violet, wallflower and peony, and in the great age-worthy wines, a unique aromatic palette: truffle, undergrowth and musk. From sandy soils to clay-limestone terroirs, no fewer than 7 single-plot cuvées are produced each year in Cabernet Franc, along with a white Chinon, the Clos de la Plante Martin (Chenin represents only 3% of the Chinon AOC). This amounts to a gustatory journey through the different climates, including fruit-forward wines to enjoy young (the red Chinon cuvées: Silènes, Les Petites Roches, La Cure and Les Charmes), through to the great age-worthy wines that are the 3 flagship cuvées of the domaine in red Chinon: Les Varennes du Grand Clos, Clos du Chêne Vert, and Clos de la Dioterie. A final cuvée is named Clos Monplaisir, from a plot with yields limited to around 20 hl/ha, with a full southern exposure and a sweeping view over the Vienne, planted in 1979. A wine with exceptional aging potential, which will reveal itself perfectly after 15 years in great vintages. The red Loires from Charles Joguet are thus highly sought after.
