Mark Angeli - La Ferme de la Sansonniere

The Ferme de la Sansonnière by Mark Angeli: great wines from the Loire

Wines from the Mark Angeli estate - Ferme de la Sansonnière: buy at the best price

The Ferme de la Sansonnière vineyard, located in Thouarcé, dates back to the 15th century, and the main 6-hectare parcel of Loire white already existed at that time. Mark Angeli acquired the estate in 1989 with its 7.8 ha of vines, and from that point on decided to apply biodynamic methods (not very fashionable at the time) to the cultivation of his vines.

Over the years, he decided to divide his vineyard into different types of terroir, in order to produce cuvées suited to each soil, with for example certain types of schist and phtanite for his cuvée La Lune, red clays on schist for Les Fouchardes, and Saint-Georges schist for the Vieilles Vignes des Blanderies, a true geological gem planted with 70-year-old vines. If the early vintages were quickly noticed by certain critics, the support of the Foucault brothers (from the famous Clos Rougeard), who sent him clients, was most welcome. Mark Angeli championed the local grolleau grape variety, and of course continued to relentlessly improve his chenin wines. Thanks to optimal ripeness of the chenin, very gentle pressing in an old vertical wooden press, ageing of 12 to 24 months in used barrels, minimal sulphur, and genuine winemaking talent, the whites impart an extraordinary saline chewiness. In 2002, when Mark Angeli submitted the wines from his finest chenin plot for appellation approval, they were rejected for the Anjou appellation. Subsequently, his entire production moved to "Vin de France" status, stepping outside the appellation system. He made the most of this period to write a highly committed book, "Les raisins de la colère", lamenting that he could not mention the place of production (Anjou) on his own wines… The cuvée La Lune is a white wine offering on the nose aromas of honey, dried fruits and apricots, with a smoky nuance. The palate is creamy, mineral, flavourful and full-bodied all at once, with a very pleasant pulpy sensation. The density of the wine can almost give it a tannic impression. Les Fouchardes has an almost saline depth, of great harmony. With its pale, limpid golden robe, this great ageing wine (15 years) reveals itself to be very elegant, refined and complex, with a magnificent finesse of expression underpinned by a strong minerality that will amplify with time. The cuvée Les Vieilles Vignes des Blanderies comes from vines over 70 years old, drawing its power from the exceptional Saint-Georges schist terroir. It is one of the great whites of the Loire, which nonetheless requires several years of cellaring to fully express its potential. The nose is rich and complex, with notes of very ripe fruit, lemon zest, acacia, an earthy backbone and lovely saline notes on the finish. The palate has a beautiful density, very long and flavourful with an impressive floral freshness and a very stimulating bitter edge. The cuvée Rosé d'un Jour has a pulpy texture, great softness, intense fruitiness and lovely freshness — ideal with aperitifs and summer meals. These are wines to be recommended, without any moderation…
