Over the years, he decided to divide his vineyard into different terroir types to produce cuvées suited to their soils: certain types of schist and phtanite for La Lune, for example, red clay over schist for Les Fouchardes, and Saint-Georges schist for Vieilles Vignes des Blanderies, a true geological jewel planted with 70-year-old vines. Although some critics were quick to take notice of his early efforts, help from the Foucault brothers (of the famous Clos Rougeard), who sent customers his way, was welcome. Mark Angeli championed the native Grolleau grape and, of course, continued to improve his Chenin wines. Thanks to optimally ripe Chenin, very gentle pressing in an old wooden vertical press, 12 to 24 months of aging in used barrels, minimal sulfur and genuine winemaking talent, the whites have extraordinary saline texture. In 2002, when Mark Angeli submitted wines from his finest Chenin parcel for approval, they were denied the Anjou appellation. Subsequently, all his production was classified as “Vin de France,” outside the appellation system. During this period, he wrote the impassioned book “Les raisins de la colère,” lamenting that he could not even mention where his own wines were made (Anjou)… La Lune is a white wine with aromas of honey, dried fruit and apricots on the nose, with a smoky nuance. The palate is creamy, mineral, flavorful and full-bodied all at once, with a very pleasant sense of texture. The wine’s density can almost give it a tannic impression. Les Fouchardes has an almost saline depth and great harmony.With its clear, pale-gold color, this age-worthy fine wine (15 years) is elegant, distinguished and complex, with magnificent finesse of expression driven by strong minerality that will intensify over time.Les Vieilles vignes des Blanderies comes from vines more than 70 years old and draws its power from exceptional Saint-Georges schist terroir. It is one of the Loire’s great whites, though it deserves several years in the cellar to express its full potential. The nose is rich and complex, with notes of ripe fruit, lemon zest and acacia, an earthy undertone and lovely saline notes on the finish. The palate is beautifully dense, very long and flavorful, with impressive floral freshness and an invigorating bitter edge. Rosé d’un Jour has a luscious texture, great sweetness, intense fruit and fine freshness, making it ideal for summer aperitifs and meals. Wines to recommend without any restraint…
