The History of Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur

The story begins more than 190 years ago with Alphonse Gros, born in 1804 in a village in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. He founded the estate in 1830 and, together with his wife Julie, was the first in the family to produce wines from Vosne-Romanée. His son Louis-Gustave proved to be a pioneer: he was among the first Côte de Nuits winemakers to bottle his wine for direct sale to private customers. In 1882, he also acquired the Richebourg plot, now the estate’s flagship holding. His successor, Jules Gros, continued this policy of acquisition, buying the Echézeaux plot in the early 20th century and, in 1920, a vineyard in Clos Vougeot at the auction of Léonce Bocquet’s estate.

The estate took its current name in 1963, when Louis Gros’s holdings were divided among his heirs. Two of his four children, Colette and Gustave, combined their vineyard shares to create their own estate, based in the family home on rue des Grands Crus. Their chosen emblem, a golden wedding cup, symbolizes this bond between siblings. Having no children of their own, Colette and Gustave welcomed their nephew Bernard in 1980 to learn the trade alongside them. After Gustave’s untimely death in 1984, Bernard Gros, then 22, joined forces with his aunt. For more than thirty years, he methodically restructured and replanted the vineyard. In 2010, he handed the reins to his children Elodie and Vincent, who carry on the “Frère et Soeur” legacy at the head of a year-round team of thirteen.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur

The vineyard spans approximately 23 hectares of terroir with a thousand-year history in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where Burgundy’s two emblematic grape varieties thrive: Pinot Noir for the reds and Chardonnay for the whites. Soil type, geology, altitude and aspect form a mosaic of factors that gives each climat its own personality. The historic core lies in Vosne-Romanée, on clay-limestone soils renowned as the birthplace of Pinot Noir, with plots at elevations of 235 to 280 meters planted at very high density, often 10,000 vines per hectare.

The grands crus occupy remarkable sites. Richebourg, replanted in 1989, lies just below the famous Cros Parantoux, facing north at 280 meters. The Clos Vougeot plot sits alongside the clos wall in its upper section, northwest of the château, and was replanted in 1986, 1988 and 1989. Echézeaux faces due east at 260 meters and was replanted in 1990 and 1995. The premier cru Les Chaumes, planted in 1986, borders La Tâche. Beyond this historic core are plots in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, in the hamlet of Concœur-et-Corboin, trained on high vines at a density of 4,800 vines per hectare at elevations of around 385 to 395 meters, as well as regional Bourgogne vineyards in Boncourt-le-Bois, Chambolle-Musigny and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux. Vineyard management is measured and adapted to the vintage: each vine receives around ten manual interventions a year, and the soils are worked to aerate the root system without disrupting its structure.

Winemaking at Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur

The grapes are harvested by hand, with careful selection of the bunches. The berries are then separated from their stems: the estate destems completely, a practice central to its style. Once in the vat, the grapes are cooled to delay the start of alcoholic fermentation and allow the skins to perfume the juice as they release their red-fruit aromas. The philosophy can be summed up in one word: infusion rather than extraction. Winemaking thus unfolds over several weeks, with a deliberate effort to limit intervention and let the grapes gradually impart their color and substance to the young wine.

The wine is then aged for eighteen months: first for twelve months in Burgundian oak barrels selected for their fine grain and local origin, then for six months in a vat, where it rests on fine lees. Light filtration precedes bottling. This long, demanding process produces wines with a velvety texture, well-integrated oak and the aromatic generosity characteristic of the estate. They can be appealing relatively early while offering genuine aging potential.

The Cuvées of Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur

Vin de France Chardonnay: from a plot planted in 2016, trained on high vines at a density of 4,800 vines per hectare. It faces due south at 375 meters on silty, clay-sandy soil and is sheltered by the surrounding woods. Its golden color with silver highlights hints at a dense wine. The nose combines clementine, kumquat, nectarine, acacia and honeysuckle with inviting brioche notes. The palate is creamy, opulent and distinctly saline, with 5 to 7 years of aging potential.

Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Blanc: this Chardonnay comes from vines planted between 1990 and 1999 in the hamlet of Concœur-et-Corboin, at an elevation of 385 meters. Its golden color with green highlights precedes aromas of toasted almond and hazelnut, acacia and broom, followed by peach, apricot and crisp pear. The palate combines striking freshness with appealing volume and roundness. Best enjoyed in its youth.

Vin de France Pinot Noir: from a plot planted in 1993 at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare, facing northeast on clay soil at 250 meters. Raspberry-ruby in color with bluish highlights, it offers aromas of Mara des Bois strawberry, black cherry, peony and rose, followed by licorice, white pepper and nutmeg. Fresh and fleshy on the palate, it has a seamless, silky texture and a crisp, tangy finish. Drink within 3 to 5 years.

Bourgogne Rouge: a blend of plots in Boncourt-le-Bois, Chambolle-Musigny and Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, planted between 1968 and 1998 on clay soils at around 240 meters. The nose offers blackberry cream, blueberry, raspberry and jammy cherry, complemented by peony, rosemary and thyme. The palate is fleshy and lively, with youthful tannins and a very long licorice finish. An immediately appealing wine that can be enjoyed young.

Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge: from two separate plots in Concœur-et-Corboin, planted between 1988 and 2001 at around 395 meters. Harvested one to two weeks later than a Bourgogne, the grapes achieve greater ripeness. The nose is balsamic and intensely spicy, with rosemary, bay leaf, licorice, Sichuan pepper and clove, alongside dark fruit and forest-floor notes. The palate is generous, fleshy and velvety, with tannins that are already silky. Aging potential: 5 to 7 years.

Chemin des Moines de Vergy: a cuvée with a distinctive history, from a single contiguous plot replanted with Pinot Noir in 2014 and 2015 on land that had not borne vines since the late 19th century. For nearly 650 years, the monks of Vergy took this path to reach their vineyard. Concentrated thanks to low yields, the wine offers blackcurrant cream, licorice candy, peony and balsamic notes, with a generous, warm, mellow palate. Allow 3 to 4 years before drinking.

Vosne-Romanée Village: a blend of three named sites—Aux Réas, Au-dessus de la Rivière and Fontaine de Vosne—planted between 1998 and 2001 at 240 meters on clay-limestone soil. An iron fist in a velvet glove: wild strawberry, sweet cherry and wild blackberry give way to a wealth of floral, spicy and chocolate notes. The palate has volume and fine-grained tannins, both velvety and powerful. Aging potential: 7 to 9 years.

Vosne-Romanée Clos de la Fontaine: a small, exclusively owned walled vineyard acquired by Jean Gros, facing south at 235 meters and planted in 1991 at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. A delight of finesse, with sweet spice, crushed strawberry, kirsch-soaked sour cherry, old rose and dried flowers. The palate is elegant and tender, with a lace-like structure and lingering notes of cherry pit and cinnamon. Ready to drink, it can also be kept for at least 5 years.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru: a historic estate cuvée blending several premier cru climats in the village, including Aux Brûlées, Les Petits Monts, Aux Reignots and Les Suchots. Considered the house’s second red wine, it stands out for its finesse, predominantly floral character, distinction and remarkable mouthfeel.

Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes: the estate’s smallest and most exclusive plot, planted in 1986 and facing east at 250 meters, just below La Tâche. Distinguished and powerful, it entices with peony, lilac, blueberry tart and blackcurrant cream, alongside toasted oak and chocolate notes. The palate is concentrated and full-bodied, with still-massive tannins that need time. Aging for 10 to 15 years suits it perfectly.

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Cras: this premier cru north of Nuits-Saint-Georges, not far from Vosne, brings a firmer, more full-bodied character to the range. Dark fruit, spice and mineral notes form a structured wine with a solid tannic foundation and good aging potential.

Echézeaux Grand Cru: a plot purchased by Jules Gros in the early 20th century, facing east at 260 meters on clay-limestone soil. This is the estate’s most charming grand cru, readily expressive in its youth. Initially showing oak and mocha, the nose reveals cherry, sour cherry, Ente plum, spice and cinnamon, followed by old rose, peony, graphite and forest floor. The palate is enveloping and concentrated, with exceptionally silky tannins. It is expected to reach its full expression in 10 to 15 years.

Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru: an immediate, more prestigious neighbor, this grand cru stands out for its remarkably delicate texture and greater complexity. With a very long finish, it combines depth and refinement while already offering pleasure in its youth.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru: a vineyard purchased by Jules Gros in 1920, alongside the clos wall in its upper section, northwest of the château, at 260 meters and facing east and southeast. Sometimes monastic in its youth, this is a wine built to age. Powdery old rose, wild blackberry and raspberry give way to clove, Sichuan pepper, tonka bean, graphite and humus. The palate is dense, rich and full-bodied, with noble, mellow tannins and a warm, velvety finish.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru “Musigni”: this plot designation, used for certain vintages, refers to the highest section of the clos, where the estate’s vines are located. It has yielded bottles praised for their aromatic openness, precision and exceptionally velvety tannins.

Richebourg Grand Cru: acquired by Louis-Gustave Gros in 1882 and replanted in 1989 at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare, this north-facing plot at 280 meters, just below Cros Parantoux, is the estate’s undisputed flagship. Sometimes austere in its youth, it is the most complex of the house’s grands crus. Toast and smoky notes give way to crushed strawberry, cinnamon, nutmeg and tobacco, then lilac, dark berries and a hint of white truffle. Rounded and fresh on the attack, the palate becomes dense and full-bodied, with the potential to age for several decades.
