This family estate in the South-West, located north of the Tarn in the Gaillac appellation area, was established during the 19th century. At that time, Jules Plageoles, an agricultural worker, cultivated vines as well as fruit trees and cereals. In 1970, the estate took a new turn with the opening of the Gaillac appellation to red wines. Indigenous grape varieties were then planted, in keeping with the estate's philosophy of cultivating local varieties in order to highlight Gaillac's heritage. Due to his originality, Robert Plageoles found himself excluded from the Gaillac AOC syndicate.
His son Bernard joined the estate in 1983 and planted local grape varieties such as ondenc, loin de l'œil and mauzac, always with the aim of perpetuating the estate's tradition and promoting its heritage. It was at this time that the estate transitioned to organic farming. Thanks to the famous gastronome Jean-Pierre Coffe, the wines of Domaine Plageoles were brought into the spotlight and enjoyed tremendous success. The Plageoles family is considered a pioneer in the development of local grape varieties and ancestral techniques of the Gaillac appellation. Today, the estate comprises two properties: Domaine des Très Cantous located in the commune of Cahuzac sur Vère (family property) and Domaine de Roucou-Cantemerle in Castelnau de Montmiral. In total, the operation extends over 35 hectares of vines: 9 hectares in red and almost 26 hectares in white. The vineyard rests on clay-limestone soils that ensure better vine resistance. The estate produces approximately 100,000 bottles per year. The wines of Domaine Plageoles are remarkable and are among the reliable values of the South-West. The estate has greatly contributed to the rediscovery of historic or disappeared grape varieties of Gaillac: Ondec, Mauzac roux, Mauzac noir, Verdanel, and offers a wide range of single-varietal cuvées. In red, the Prunelart cuvée is one of the estate's historic cuvées, a grape variety also known as côt à queue rouge, cultivated since the 15th century, with notes of fresh plum and licorice, even going towards a hint of leather. With more specificity and originality, in white, the Plageoles Vin d'Autan cuvée (ondenc blanc grape variety) is a liquorous wine par excellence. Another originality and rarity, still in white, the Vin de Voile cuvée in dry (Mauzac roux grape variety) offers beautiful balance and spicy and dried fruit aromas.
