Domaine du Tunnel

Since 2013, Domaine du Tunnel has added a Condrieu to its range. Today, the estate covers 11 hectares, including 8 hectares of red wine grapes, across Cornas, St-Péray, Glun, Mauves, Tournon-sur-Rhône and Chavanay. The cuvées are made primarily from old vines on slopes or terraces with granite soils. The grape varieties are Syrah (Cornas and St-Joseph), Marsanne and Roussanne (St-Péray), and Viognier (Condrieu). In 2014, Stéphane Robert had a cellar excavated in a former railway tunnel, with a stunning view of Château de Crussol. Stéphane Robert makes precise, modern wines regarded as benchmarks in the Cornas and St-Péray appellations. His Syrah reds benefit from aging, and the cuvées from Domaine du Tunnel stand apart from the sometimes rustic, sun-drenched local style found in both appellations. With a high proportion of old vines and meticulous vineyard work to keep yields exceptionally low, the wines of Domaine du Tunnel combine generous concentration with silky finesse. The range includes three Cornas wines: the classic cuvée is drawn from a selection of around fifteen plots and offers a lively, appealing profile, with fine tannins wrapped in rich notes of black fruit, tapenade and spice. The Cornas cuvée “Vin Noir” is selected from three century-old hillside vineyards in the Champelrose, Eygats and La Combe lieux-dits. “Vin Noir” reveals refined aromas of black fruit, pepper and smoky notes. Deeper and more tannic than the estate’s classic Cornas, it has excellent aging potential of at least 10 to 12 years. A rare cuvée called “Pur Noir” is selected from one or two barrels of Vin Noir. The St-Joseph comes from vines averaging 50 years old in Tournon-sur-Rhône, Mauves and Glun. This elegant, full-bodied red offers aromas of red and black berries and sweet spices. Its approachable texture is appealing, while its precise fruit reveals fine tannins that pair beautifully with lamb. Among the whites, Domaine du Tunnel produces a well-balanced, wonderfully fresh St-Péray made entirely from Roussanne. The estate also makes two other St-Péray cuvées, one 100% Marsanne and the other 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne, as well as a recently introduced Condrieu. An estate well worth recommending.
