Domaine du Tunnel, Northern Rhône: a fine estate across Cornas, Saint-Péray, Saint-Joseph and Condrieu
Domaine du TUNNEL, located in St Péray, was founded in 1996 by Stéphane Robert. He started with only 2.5 hectares of vines located on the right bank of the Rhône, in Ardèche across the appellations Cornas, Saint-Péray and Saint-Joseph.

Since 2013, the domaine du Tunnel has expanded its range with a Condrieu, and today the wine estate covers 11 ha (of which 8 ha are red), across the communes of Cornas, St-Péray, Glun, Mauves, Tournon sur Rhône and Chavanay. The cuvées are produced mainly from old hillside or terraced vines grown on granitic soils. The grape varieties used are Syrah (Cornas / St-Joseph), Marsanne and Roussanne (St-Péray), as well as Viognier (Condrieu). In 2014, Stéphane Robert had a cellar carved out of a former railway tunnel, with a breathtaking view of the Château de Crussol. Stéphane Robert crafts precise and modern wines, regarded as benchmarks within the Cornas and St-Péray appellations. The Syrah reds benefit from ageing, and it is fair to say that the cuvées offered by the domaine du Tunnel differ from a certain local style — sometimes rustic and sun-drenched — common in these two appellations. With a high proportion of old vines and rigorous vineyard work to achieve extremely controlled yields, the style of the domaine du Tunnel wines sits in a register of rich concentration combined with silky finesse. The range includes 3 Cornas: the classic cuvée is drawn from a selection of around fifteen plots and offers a generous and lively profile, with fine tannins wrapped in full-bodied notes of black fruit, tapenade and spice. The Cornas cuvée "Vin Noir" is a selection from 3 century-old vines planted on hillside slopes in the lieu-dits Champelrose, Eygats and la Combe. The "Vin Noir" delivers, with great finesse, aromas of black fruit, pepper and empyreumatic notes. It proves deeper and more tannic than the domaine's classic Cornas and has a fine ageing potential of at least 10 to 12 years. A rare cuvée called "Pur Noir" is drawn from a selection of one or two barrels of the Vin Noir. The St-Joseph comes from vines with an average age of 50 years in Tournon sur Rhône, Mauves and Glun. This elegant and full-bodied red wine develops aromas of small red and black fruits and gentle spices on the nose. It seduces with its supple texture, and the precision of its fruit reveals beautiful tannins that pair perfectly with lamb. In white, the domaine du Tunnel produces a St-Péray of pure Roussanne, perfectly balanced and wonderfully fresh. Two other St-Péray cuvées (one 100% Marsanne, and one 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne) are also produced at the domaine du Tunnel, as well as a recent Condrieu cuvée. An estate well worth recommending.
