History of Domaine Vincent Gaudry

The history of Domaine Vincent Gaudry is intimately bound up with that of his family and his land. Heir to a family estate going back several generations, Vincent joined the domaine in 1991, at the age of 16. From an early age, he developed a passion for the vine and wine, nurturing a clear ambition: to produce sincere wines, true to their terroir.

In the 1990s, when chemical treatments still dominated viticulture, Vincent made a decisive turn. A bad experience with a chemical treatment led him to abandon these practices and embrace environmentally responsible farming. He began a gradual conversion to organic agriculture, earning AB certification in 2002, then to biodynamics, with the Demeter label in 2006.

Today, the estate spans 13 hectares, cultivated with meticulous care. Vincent Gaudry sees his role as a winemaker as that of a custodian: he draws inspiration from those who came before him to preserve and elevate the identity of Sancerre's terroirs, while pursuing a perpetual quest for perfection and sincerity.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Vincent Gaudry

Domaine Vincent Gaudry benefits from an exceptional diversity of terroirs, spread across the hills of Sancerre, Saint-Satur, Sury-en-Vaux and Chavignol. These terroirs, combining the renowned caillottes, flint and clay-limestone soils, offer a unique palette of flavours and textures in the estate's wines.

Caillottes: These calcareous soils, rich in small pebbles, bring aromatic finesse and vivacity to the wines.

Flint: Found notably in Saint-Satur, this soil imparts tension, minerality and great ageing potential.

Clay-limestone soils and Kimmeridgian marls: These rich, deep soils provide structure and breadth, while sustaining a beautiful freshness.

The majority of the estate's vines are planted with Sauvignon Blanc (90%), complemented by 10% Pinot Noir. Certain plots are home to vines over 50 years old, tended using ancestral methods such as horse ploughing, to respect the natural balance of the soils.

Winemaking at Domaine Vincent Gaudry

In the estate's cellar, Vincent Gaudry adopts a low-interventionist approach, respecting the grape and its natural cycle. The harvest is carried out by hand to preserve the integrity of the berries and ensure a rigorous selection of the bunches.

The vinification varies according to the cuvée, but rests on a few fundamental principles:

Use of indigenous yeasts to express the unique character of the terroir.

Temperature-controlled fermentations in stainless steel tanks, wood vats or barrels, depending on the specific characteristics of the wine.

Extended ageing on fine lees to develop complexity and texture.

No fining or aggressive filtration, so as to preserve the purity and integrity of the wine.

The estate's cuvées benefit from tailored ageing, in stainless steel or wood vats, 600-litre barrels or conical oak tanks, depending on their potential and the terroir they come from.
