History of the Vincent Gaudry Estate

The history of the Vincent Gaudry estate is intimately linked to that of his family and their lands. Heir to a family operation dating back several generations, Vincent joined the estate in 1991, at the age of 16. Very early on, he developed a passion for vines and wine, nurturing a clear ambition: to produce sincere wines, faithful to their terroir.

In the 1990s, when the use of chemicals still dominated viticulture, Vincent took a decisive turn. A bad experience with chemical treatment prompted him to abandon these practices and turn towards environmentally respectful agriculture. He initiated a gradual conversion to organic farming, obtaining AB certification in 2002, then to biodynamics, with the Demeter label in 2006.

Today, the estate extends over 13 hectares, cultivated with meticulous care. Vincent Gaudry considers his role as a winemaker as that of a conveyor: he draws inspiration from the ancients to preserve and sublimate the identity of Sancerre's terroirs, while inscribing his work in a perpetual quest for perfection and sincerity.

Terroirs and Vineyards of the Vincent Gaudry Estate

The Vincent Gaudry estate benefits from an exceptional diversity of terroirs, spread across the hills of Sancerre, Saint-Satur, Sury-en-Vaux and Chavignol. These terroirs, which combine the famous caillottes, flint and clay-limestone soils, offer a unique palette of flavors and textures to the estate's wines.

Caillottes: These limestone soils, rich in small pebbles, bring aromatic finesse and vivacity to the wines.

Flint: Present notably in Saint-Satur, this soil imparts tension, minerality and great aging capacity.

Clay-limestone and Kimmeridgian marls: These rich and deep soils offer structure and amplitude, while maintaining beautiful freshness.

The majority of the estate's vines are planted with Sauvignon Blanc (90%), complemented by 10% Pinot Noir. Some plots contain vines over 50 years old, worked with ancestral methods, such as plowing with horses, to respect the natural balance of the soils.

Winemaking at the Vincent Gaudry Estate

In the estate's cellar, Vincent Gaudry adopts a low-intervention approach, respecting the grapes and their natural cycle. Harvesting is done by hand to preserve the integrity of the berries and ensure rigorous selection of the clusters.

Winemaking varies according to the cuvées, but relies on a few fundamental principles:

Use of indigenous yeasts to express the unique character of the terroir.

Temperature-controlled fermentations in stainless steel, wooden or barrel vats, according to the wine's specificities.

Long aging on fine lees to develop complexity and texture.

No fining or aggressive filtration, in order to preserve the wine's purity and integrity.

The estate's cuvées benefit from tailored aging, in stainless steel or wooden vats, 600-liter barrels or truncated oak vats, depending on their potential and their terroir of origin.
