History of Domaine Alphonse Mellot

 Located in the picturesque Loire wine region, the Alphonse Mellot wine estate has a rich and distinguished history dating back to the 16th century. Local archives record the Mellot family as renowned winegrowers and wine merchants as early as that time. In 1698, King Louis XIV even appointed César Mellot as a wine advisor, underscoring the family’s exceptional reputation in the wine world.

In the early 19th century, Alphonse Mellot founded the family wine business in Sancerre, which grew over successive generations. Its vineyards cover more than 30 contiguous hectares on the hillsides of Sancerre, where limestone soils are ideal for the noble Sauvignon Blanc grape. The Mellot family has passed down its winemaking tradition from father to son, with each eldest son bearing the founder’s first name.

Thus, since 1513, 18 generations of Alphonse Mellots have succeeded one another, passing down the same first name and their expertise in the vineyards and cellars from father to son to produce outstanding wines that define each generation. 

Today, Alphonse Mellot Junior, representing the family’s twentieth generation of winegrowers, carries on its legacy with passion and dedication. 

Terroir, Vines and Viticulture at Domaine Alphonse Mellot

The estate now spans 48 hectares, 39 of which are devoted to white wines, and is recognized for producing some of the finest Sancerre wines in the appellation.

East of Bourges, on the banks of the Loire, the Sancerre vineyards cover 2,500 hectares. Sauvignon Blanc is planted for white wines (75% of production), and Pinot Noir for red wines. On hillsides at an elevation of around 200 meters, the white-wine vineyards fall into three distinct areas: to the west, clay, limestone and Kimmeridgian marl soils yield powerful wines; in the center, gravel and limestone soils produce particularly delicate wines; and near the town of Sancerre, flint soils give rise to highly aromatic wines. All show notes of currant, citrus, flowers and spice. A few late-harvest wines are produced in favorable years.

The Cuvées of Domaine Alphonse Mellot 

Among the estate’s signature cuvées are Edmond, made from vines over 40 years old, and Génération XIX, produced from very old vines nearly 90 years of age. These wines stand out for their finesse, aromatic bouquet and fruit character, perfectly reflecting Sancerre’s unique terroir.

Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Les Romains (white): From a plot planted in 1951 on flinty clay soil, this pure Sauvignon Blanc embodies the Mellot family’s excellence. Meticulous biodynamic cultivation gives it a lemon-yellow color with green highlights and a delicate bouquet of floral notes, dried fruit, chalk and candied citrus. On the palate, it is lush, generous and fruity, pairing beautifully with river fish, regional cheeses and even desserts such as warm tarte Tatin.

Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Cuvée Edmond (white): Made from old vines ranging from 40 to over 80 years of age, this white Sancerre has a rich, powerful nose with a varied bouquet of fruit and flowers, complemented by notes of honey, vanilla and brioche. On the palate, it is expansive and rich, with a long, spicy, oaky finish. It pairs beautifully with poultry or seared scallops.

Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière (white): From the estate of the same name, this white Sancerre is grown on south-facing "Saint Doulchard" marl, giving the wine a distinctive character. Its floral and fruity bouquet and pure, straightforward, supple and lively texture make it appealing for its energy. It pairs beautifully with delicate dishes such as fish tartare, gougères or Crottin de Chavignol.

Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Génération XIX (red): This cuvée comes from a small, one-hectare plot where vines over 60 years old grow in Kimmeridgian marl soil. Grown according to biodynamic principles, the grapes are harvested by hand and cold-macerated to preserve the delicate tannins and aromas of Pinot Noir. With its deep ruby color, captivating nose of dark fruit, and full, structured palate, this rare cuvée has immense aging potential and pairs beautifully with dishes such as mushroom fricassee.
