History of Domaine Alphonse Mellot

Located in the picturesque Loire wine region, Domaine Alphonse Mellot has a rich and prestigious history dating back to the 16th century. Local archives attest to the presence of the Mellot family as renowned winemakers and wine merchants as early as that period. In 1698, King Louis XIV even appointed César Mellot as wine advisor, thus highlighting the family's exceptional reputation in the wine world.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Alphonse Mellot founded the family house in Sancerre, which developed through the generations. The vineyards extend over more than 30 hectares in a single block, on the high vineyards of Sancerre, with limestone soils ideal for the noble grape variety, Sauvignon Blanc. The Mellot family perpetuates the viticultural tradition from father to son, with each eldest bearing the founder's first name.

Thus, since 1513, 18 generations of Alphonse Mellot have succeeded one another with the transmission from father to son of the same first name, the right practices to adopt in the vineyards and in the cellars, in order to produce excellent wines that mark each generation.

Today, Alphonse Mellot junior, representing the twentieth generation of winemakers in the family, perpetuates the family heritage with passion and dedication.

Terroir, Vineyards, Viticulture at Domaine Alphonse Mellot

The estate now extends over 48 hectares, of which 39 are devoted to white wines, and is recognized for producing some of the finest Sancerres in the appellation.

Located east of Bourges, on the banks of the Loire, the Sancerre vineyard extends over 2,500 ha. It is planted with Sauvignon for white wines (75% of production), and Pinot Noir for red wines. Situated on hills, at about 200 m altitude, the white wine vineyards are divided into 3 distinct areas: to the west, soils of clay, limestone, and Kimmeridgian marls produce powerful wines; in the center, soils of gravel and limestone produce particularly delicate wines; and from those near the town of Sancerre, flint soils, result very aromatic wines. All feature notes of currant, citrus, flowers and spices. Some late harvests are produced during favorable years.
Several producers stand out in this appellation such as Didier Dagueneau, Edmond Vatan, François Cotat, Gérard Boulay, Henri Bourgeois, Lucien Crochet, Pascal Cotat, Sébastien Riffault, Vacheron, Vincent Gaudry, Vincent Pinard...

The viticultural practices of Domaine Mellot are conducted biodynamically, with particular attention to ripeness control, ensuring wines of exceptional quality.

The Cuvées of Domaine Alphonse Mellot

Among the estate's emblematic cuvées are Edmond, made from vines over 40 years old, and the Génération XIX cuvée, produced from very old vines nearly 90 years old. These wines stand out for their finesse, aromatic bouquet and fruitiness, perfectly reflecting Sancerre's unique terroir.

Sancerre Les Romains by Alphonse Mellot (white): Made from a parcel planted in 1951 on clay-flint soil, this pure Sauvignon Blanc embodies the excellence of the Mellot family. Thanks to meticulous biodynamic cultivation, it stands out with a lemon-yellow robe with green reflections and reveals a delicate bouquet combining floral notes, dried fruits, chalk and candied citrus. On the palate, it offers a voluptuous, generous and fruity texture, pairing perfectly with river fish, regional cheeses and even desserts such as a warm tarte tatin.

Sancerre Cuvée Edmond by Alphonse Mellot (white): Crafted from old vines aged between forty and over eighty years, this white Sancerre reveals a rich and powerful nose, offering a varied aromatic bouquet of fruits and flowers, enhanced by notes of honey, vanilla and brioche. On the palate, it stands out for its amplitude, richness and long spicy and oaky finish, harmonizing perfectly with poultry or seared scallops.

Sancerre La Moussière by Alphonse Mellot (white): From the eponymous estate, this white Sancerre is cultivated on "Saint Doulchard" marls with full southern exposure, giving the wine strong typicity. With its floral and fruity bouquet and pure, frank, supple and lively texture, it captivates with its energy and pairs perfectly with refined dishes such as fish tartare, gougères or Crottin de Chavignol.

Sancerre Génération XIX by Alphonse Mellot (red): This cuvée comes from a small one-hectare parcel where the vines, aged over 60 years, grow on Kimmeridgian marl soil. Cultivated according to biodynamic principles, manual harvesting and cold maceration preserve the delicate tannins and aromas of Pinot Noir. With its deep ruby robe, captivating nose of black fruits and ample, structured palate, this rare cuvée offers immense aging potential and pairs perfectly with dishes such as a mushroom fricassée.

In conclusion, Domaine Alphonse Mellot embodies the excellence and viticultural tradition of the Loire, offering wines of exceptional quality and timeless elegance. The Mellot family continues to perpetuate its heritage with passion and determination, thus ensuring the longevity of its prestigious estate for generations to come.
