The History of Domaine Vincent Pinard

The history of Domaine Vincent Pinard is rooted in the village of Bué, where the Pinard family has lived for more than 20 generations. In the early 20th century, Armand Pinard practiced mixed farming, with around 3 hectares of vines and a small production of Crottin de Chavignol cheese. In 1945, his son Charles took over the estate, then devastated by World War II. Despite the difficulties, Charles revived the business and delivered his wines to Paris in barrels in the 1960s.

Vincent Pinard, Charles’s son, took over the estate in the early 1970s. Passionate about viticulture, he gradually expanded the vineyard from 12 hectares in the 1980s to 15 hectares in the 2000s. Today, the estate spans 17 hectares: 12.5 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and 4.5 hectares of Pinot Noir. Brothers Florent and Clément Pinard, the 20th generation, now run the estate with the same passion and commitment to quality and respect for the terroirs.

Their philosophy? Combining tradition and innovation to produce wines that express the essence of Bué’s soils. Farmed organically since 2001 and biodynamically since 2016, Domaine Vincent Pinard is a model of sustainable, environmentally responsible agriculture.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Vincent Pinard

Domaine Vincent Pinard benefits from exceptional terroirs on the hills of Bué, just 3 km from Sancerre. The predominantly limestone and clay-limestone soils offer unique geological diversity, with subsoils of caillottes (small limestone pebbles), Kimmeridgian marl and silica. These terroirs give the wines remarkable minerality, complexity and length on the palate.

Most of the vines are 35 to 50 years old and are cultivated with care and precision. Planting density ranges from 7,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare, ensuring low yields and high-quality grapes. The most notable plots include:

- Petit Chemarin: west-facing Kimmeridgian soil that produces taut, mineral-driven wines.

- Grand Chemarin: a south-facing Kimmeridgian and Oxfordian terroir that yields powerful, complex wines.

- Le Château: a south-facing Kimmeridgian plot planted in 1968.

- Chêne Marchand: south-facing Oxfordian soil, with vines planted between 1959 and 1964.

Vineyard practices are rigorous: natural ground cover, hand harvesting into small crates and minimal copper- and sulfur-based treatments. Since 2018, the estate has also been experimenting with biodynamics, further strengthening the connection between the vines and their environment.

Winemaking at Domaine Vincent Pinard

Winemaking at Domaine Vincent Pinard is a skillful blend of tradition and modernity. The hand-harvested grapes are carefully sorted before being gently pressed to preserve their integrity. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts selected and cultivated by the estate to enhance the expression of the terroirs.

The white wines are aged mainly in half-muid casks and French oak barrels, with no new oak, to preserve the purity of the fruit. The red wines, meanwhile, are made with minimal intervention: long macerations, limited punch-downs and aging in barrels of various sizes, including pièces and half-muid casks.

The estate also stands out for its minimal use of sulfur, derived from natural volcanic sulfur. This gentle, respectful approach produces wines of great finesse that faithfully reflect the character of each terroir.

The Cuvées of Domaine Vincent Pinard

Domaine Vincent Pinard offers a range of white, red and rosé wines, each expressing the distinctive character of Bué’s terroirs. Here are the estate’s signature cuvées:

Sancerre Blanc

"Florès": Made from the youngest vines, which are over 40 years old, this wine is an estate classic. Aged in large oak casks, it combines freshness, minerality and complexity.

"Nuance": An aromatic, expressive cuvée aged in tanks and barrels for a balance of fruit and minerality.

"Harmonie": A blend of grapes from the Grand Chemarin and Petit Chemarin plots, this wine is a model of balance and finesse.

"Petit Chemarin": Grown on Kimmeridgian soil, this wine stands out for its tension and chalky minerality.

"Grand Chemarin": A powerful, complex wine that reflects the richness of its Kimmeridgian terroir.

"Le Château": Aged in barrels, this wine offers a rich texture and exceptional length on the palate.

"Chêne Marchand": Made from old vines planted in Oxfordian soil, this wine has great depth and striking minerality.

Sancerre Rouge

"Pinot Noir": A fruity, elegant wine aged in barrels for a silky texture.

"Charlouise": Made from vines over 50 years old, this wine is aged for 18 months in new and older barrels.

"Vendanges Entières": Made with 100% whole grapes, this wine offers greater richness and complexity.

While names such as Alphonse Mellot, Didier Dagueneau, Edmond Vatan, François and Pascal Cotat are already well-known benchmarks, many other estates deserve to be discovered.
