Wine 1998 Bourgogne

The 1998 vintage in Burgundy makes for a contrasted and uneven year, marked by a violent heat spike in August, hail episodes and rain at the end of the season. The reds (Pinot Noir) bear its imprint: structured and firm, sometimes with rather rustic tannins in the affected areas, but convincing and deep at best, notably in the Côte de Nuits (Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée). The whites (Chardonnay) often fare better, fresh and classic, from Meursault to Puligny-Montrachet and Chablis. The ageing potential of the best reds is real. Most cuvées are today at their peak, with the most structured reds having softened their framework. Sitting between the charming 1997 and the great 1999, the 1998 remains a heterogeneous vintage, to be judged on a case-by-case basis.
