The 1973 vintage in Burgundy affirmed itself as a very abundant and appealing year, born of a plentiful harvest whose high yields led to noticeable dilution. The whites (Chardonnay) often came off best, fresh, fruity and flavourful, with immediate charm, with fine expressions in the Côte de Beaune (Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet) and in Chablis. The reds (Pinot Noir), lighter and more supple, seduce with their fruit and easy-going character, in an ephemeral format with short ageing potential, with more consistent success in the Côte de Nuits. The ageing potential is limited, especially for wines made for early enjoyment. Most cuvées are now ready to drink, or even past their peak. Between the distinguished 1972 and the mediocre 1974, the 1973 remains a charming vintage, more convincing in white than in red.
