Wines from Domaine Comte Senard: buy at the best price

At the heart of the charming village of Aloxe-Corton, in the Côte de Beaune, 3 kilometres north of Beaune, Domaine Comte Senard is one of the most prestigious estates in Burgundy. Founded in 1857 by Jules Senard with the creation of the monopole "Corton Clos des Meix", it is today led by Lorraine Senard, sixth generation of the family, who succeeded her father Philippe Senard in 2005, joined since 2020 by her brother Mathieu Senard. Spanning 10 hectares across prestigious appellations of the Côte de Beaune, this family estate is one of the few to offer Grand Crus in both red and white on the mythical hill of Corton (Clos des Meix, Bressandes, Clos du Roi, Paulands, en Charlemagne, Corton-Charlemagne), complemented by Premiers Crus, Villages and regional cuvées.

History of Domaine Comte Senard

The history of Domaine Comte Senard begins in 1857, when Jules Senard, the first generation of the family, acquired the Clos des Meix plot on the mythical hillside of Corton, thus creating the estate's emblematic monopole — a climat of 2.5 hectares that would forever become its signature. Over successive generations, the acquisition of prestigious appellations such as Corton "Paulands", Corton "Bressandes", Corton "Clos du Roi", Corton "en Charlemagne" and Corton-Charlemagne considerably enhanced the estate's reputation, which today extends across 10 hectares.

Philippe Senard, the fourth generation, left a profound mark on the estate and on Burgundy's wine world during his tenure (1977–2005). A larger-than-life character, international ambassador for Burgundy, head of protocol for the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin for 30 years, passionate sailor (he sailed one and a half times around the world), epicurean and visionary, he was among the first winegrowers to vinify his own estate's wines and co-developed the celebrated cold pre-fermentation maceration technique. As early as 1992, aware of the ecological urgency, he banned certain phytosanitary products. In 1999, he created one of the first table d'hôtes established within a Burgundy estate. In 2005, his daughter Lorraine Senard took over. A sixth-generation winemaker of great talent, she has preserved "l'Esprit de Corton" while bringing her own modern touch, and was joined in 2020 by her brother Mathieu, returning from the United States, who heads the commercial operations. A wonderful family adventure, praised by La Revue du Vin de France, the Guide Hachette and Bettane et Desseauve.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Comte Senard

The vineyard of Domaine Comte Senard spans 10 hectares at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, of which 8 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir for the reds and 2 hectares with Chardonnay for the whites. The majority of the plots are concentrated on the mythical hill of Corton, in Aloxe-Corton, which marks the boundary between the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. The estate cultivates six prestigious Corton Grand Crus there, at varying altitudes and exposures, on soils characteristic of great Burgundy: clays, calcareous marls and fractured Jurassic limestone, which lend Pinot Noir and Chardonnay their finesse, depth and incomparable mineral signature.

The jewel of the estate remains the Corton Clos des Meix, a 2.5-hectare monopole created by Jules Senard in 1857, which produces both a red Grand Cru and a rare white Grand Cru, making Comte Senard one of the very few estates to offer Grand Crus in both colours on Corton. This mosaic is complemented by plots in Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Valozières, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille, as well as cuvées in Aloxe-Corton Village, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Auxey-Duresses and Meursault. Vineyard management is rigorously reasoned, currently undergoing conversion to organic farming, with no herbicides or insecticides. Harvesting is entirely manual, with a strict double sorting to guarantee the optimal quality of the grapes.

Winemaking at Domaine Comte Senard

In the cellars, housed in chai buildings constructed in the 14th century by the Benedictine monks of the Abbaye de Sainte-Marguerite, Lorraine Senard applies a precise and demanding winemaking approach, inherited from the great tradition of her father Philippe and enriched by the modernity she brings to the estate. For the reds, the celebrated cold pre-fermentation maceration lasting 5 to 12 days — a technique co-developed by Philippe Senard — allows for a slow and precise extraction of Pinot Noir aromas while preserving the characteristic delicacy of the grape variety. A pre-fermentation whole-bunch vinification is sometimes employed to preserve aromatic finesse.

Fermentations are conducted at controlled temperatures, followed by gentle and precise pressings. For the whites, ageing lasts on average 12 months in oak barrels, with a carefully managed proportion of new wood. For the reds, ageing lasts 18 months in barrels (up to 40% new wood for certain prestige cuvées), in the estate's centuries-old cellars. Lorraine Senard has introduced several changes to allow the wines to be enjoyed sooner while preserving their outstanding ageing potential. The result is a recognisable signature: seductive wines with characteristic Burgundian elegance, a silky tannic structure and a great aptitude for ageing, faithful to "l'Esprit de Corton" cultivated over six generations.

The Cuvées of Domaine Comte Senard
