A rising estate: the domaine de l'Horizon!
Hailing from Germany, the highly promising Thomas Theibert is behind the much-acclaimed wines of Domaine de l’Horizon, located in Languedoc Roussillon at Calce.
An experienced young winemaker, he honed his skills in Germany at the estates of Franz Keller and Wörwag before working in vineyards around the world (Italy, Austria, South Africa… and even Bordeaux, at Château Canon la Gaffelière in the Saint-Emilion appellation). He later returned to his home region and became manager of Domaine de Manincor before striking out on his own… In 2006, he decided to take over this 15 ha estate at the foot of the Pyrenees. A disciple of Gérard Gauby, he quickly attracted attention for his wines, which soon developed their own expression: whites made from Macabeu, Grenache Gris and Muscat à Petits Grains (4, 2 and 2 hectares respectively), and reds made from Carignan (4.5 ha), Grenache Noir (2 ha) and Syrah (0.5 ha). The vines, averaging 65 years of age and planted in limestone, marl and schist soils, were initially farmed organically. But Thomas Theibert went further in his pursuit of natural methods, converting the estate to biodynamics in 2008. This wholly natural approach extends to the cellar, with indigenous yeasts and an emphasis on infusion rather than extraction. Aging lasts about a year on average, in the renowned large oak casks of the prestigious Stockinger cooperage, with which he had worked before. The wines of Domaine de l’horizon, in the IGP Coteaux du Languedoc appellation, have a fine, fruity profile. Remarkably fresh, both red and white, they challenge the common perception that Languedoc wines are defined by high alcohol and overripeness. Strongly endorsed by critics and sought after by wine lovers, they come from exceptionally low yields comparable to those of Château d'Yquem, Domaine Leroy or Romanée Conti… Estimated at 10 to 15 hl/ha, these yields are three to four times lower than those of a Bordeaux Grand Cru.
