Château La Gaffelière, 1st Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Emilion.
1st grand cru classé B of Saint-Emilion since the beginning of the classification, Château de la Gaffelière is, along with Château Ausone, one of the oldest wine estates in the Bordeaux region. Not only have its vines been cultivated since the Gallo-Roman era, but the estate also has the distinction of being owned by the same family since the 16th century. A rather rare fact in the history of Bordeaux worth noting, thus making the Malet-Roquefort family the oldest family in Saint-Emilion.
Located between the hills of Ausone and Pavie, the conditions are ideal for vine development: a south-facing orientation combined with clay-limestone soil. The grape variety consists of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, and the average age of the vines is 35 years. The estate's know-how, passed down from generation to generation, oscillates between tradition and modernity, allowing optimal exploitation of this vineyard of approximately 22 hectares. Manual harvesting is combined with highly selective sorting to keep only the finest grapes. This is followed by fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks, then aging for 12 to 15 months in oak barrels (50% new wood). The aging potential of the wines can easily exceed 20 years for the best vintages. Although a slight lull was observed during the 70s and 80s, the estate's wines now do full justice to their classification. They seduce with their finesse and elegance. Without being very tannic or very full-bodied, their fruitiness and finesse make them wines of great sensuality.
