Fontaine Gagnard

Domaine Fontaine Gagnard wines: buy at the best price

Fontaine Gagnard is an estate located in the Côte de Beaune (Bourgogne) at Chassagne Montrachet, with a superb 12-hectare vineyard, created in 1985 by Richard and Laurence Fontaine. Less publicised than many other estates producing white Bourgogne in the Côte de Beaune, the greater part of the vineyard is located in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, with a few plots nevertheless in the Pommard and Volnay appellations (Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens, Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes).

Yet the range of wines from Domaine Fontaine Gagnard is very extensive and composed of no less than 22 crus including 10 white Premiers Crus of Chassagne-Montrachet blanc (La Boudriotte, Les Caillerets, Les Chenevottes, Clos des Murées, Clos St Jean, La Grande Montagne, La Maltroie, Morgeot, La Romanée, Les Vergers). Added to these are 2 Premiers crus of Chassagne-Montrachet in red wine (Clos St Jean and Morgeot). The best is yet to come: no less than 3 Grands Crus with a micro parcel (0.08 ha) of the mythical Montrachet, whose roundness and aromatic complexity only grow over the years to reveal a masterful power. Barely 0.33 ha of Batard Montrachet, and finally another 0.33 ha of Criots Batard Montrachet, which finds its harmony in its richness and aromas of well-ripened yellow fruits, accompanied by an always imposing persistence.

It is true that with such a heritage of vines, Domaine Fontaine Gagnard is particularly well endowed. Few wine samples are presented to the French press, and one can think that the discretion of Domaine Fontaine Gagnard perfectly suits informed enthusiasts, who prefer not to share their best addresses too much, or perhaps only with a few discerning wine merchants or oenophiles, or the English and American markets. The vinification methods of Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard are very classic: manual harvesting, aging in oak barrels, of which 25 to 30% in new barrels, fining and light filtration. Following one year of aging, the white wines are bottled. The red Burgundies remain in barrels for 14 to 18 months depending on the vintage. The wines of Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard are always very pure and all in finesse without losing any of their generosity or power. It is recommended to wait between 5 and 8 years to consume the white wines of Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard, and in red, the Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens can improve for 15 years.
