The history of Domaine Blain Gagnard

The estate was founded when Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard joined forces in 1980. He comes from the Sancerre region, while she is a Burgundian from Chassagne whose family is deeply rooted in wine. The estate’s vineyards come mainly from Domaine Delagrange-Bachelet and Gagnard-Delagrange, belonging respectively to Claudine’s grandparents and parents, as well as from a few purchases.

Today, the couple produces wines from around twenty appellations, including Chassagne Montrachet, Montrachet Premier Cru, Montrachet, Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru, Puligny Montrachet and Volnay Premier Cru… And the exceptional, very rare Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru. 

The terroir consists of limestone and marl soils, which give the wines great finesse and elegance alongside a fine structure. The estate’s vineyards come mainly from Domaine Delagrange-Bachelet and Gagnard-Delagrange, belonging respectively to Claudine’s grandparents and parents, as well as from a few purchases. The vines are planted with Chardonnay (55%), with the remainder planted with Pinot Noir.

In the vineyard and the winery alike, the grapes are handled with care: sustainable pest management, plowing between the rows, crushing and then pressing the white grapes, settling the must, barrel fermentation, stirring the lees to bring more flavor and complexity to the Chardonnay, racking, then resting in stainless steel tanks before the white wines are bottled just ahead of the next vintage. For the red wines, extraction from the Pinot Noir is kept to a minimum to soften Chassagne’s often uncompromising tannins. Coopers are also chosen carefully so that the wines do not become overtly oaky. Jean-Marc Blain always makes decisions that favor the elegance of his wines rather than giving too much prominence to power. 

In just thirty years or so, Jean-Marc Blain has become a leading name in Chassagne!

Domaine Blain Gagnard produces numerous Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, as well as wines from several village appellations: Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Boudriotte, Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets, Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot, Chassagne Montrachet, Montrachet, Puligny Montrachet, Criots Bâtard Montrachet, Volnay… 

  • Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Boudriotte: a distinctive terroir with white, chalky soil quite unlike that of neighboring sites, warranting a single-parcel cuvée. Luscious, elegant fruit characterizes this appealing wine, supported by fine acidity that gives it excellent aging potential.
  • Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets: a parcel stretching the full length of the named site, with soils that vary by altitude. Marl higher up gives the wines body, while white soil toward the valley brings elegance and finesse!
