The history of Domaine Blain Gagnard

The estate was born from the union of Jean-Marc Blain and Claudine Gagnard in 1980. He is originally from the Sancerrois and she, a Burgundian, is from Chassagne, with a family deeply rooted in wine. The estate's vines come essentially from the Delagrange-Bachelet and Gagnard-Delagrange estates, Claudine's grandparents and parents respectively, and from a few purchases.

Domaine Blain Gagnard today

The couple today produces wines across around twenty appellations, among which one can mention: Chassagne Montrachet, Montrachet Premier Cru, Montrachet, Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru, Puligny Montrachet, Volnay Premier Cru… And the exceptional and very rare Grand Cru Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet.

The terroir consists of limestone and marl soils, which lend great finesse and elegance to the wines, all with a beautiful structure. The estate's vines come essentially from the Delagrange-Bachelet and Gagnard-Delagrange estates, Claudine's grandparents and parents respectively, and from a few purchases. The vines are planted with Chardonnay (55%) and the remainder with Pinot Noir.

Both in the vineyard and in the cellar, the vines are carefully tended: sustainable farming, inter-row ploughing, crushing followed by pressing of the whites, settling, barrel fermentation, lees stirring technique to bring greater flavour and complexity to the Chardonnay, racking, then resting in stainless steel vats and bottling of the whites just before the following vintage. For the red wines, extraction of the Pinot Noir is kept to a minimum, so as to soften the often uncompromising tannins of Chassagne. The coopers are also carefully selected so as not to over-oak the wines. Jean-Marc Blain always makes decisions that maximise the elegance of his wines rather than giving too much room to power.

Thus, Jean-Marc Blain has become, in about thirty years, a reference in Chassagne!

The wines of Domaine Blain Gagnard

Domaine Blain Gagnard produces many Premier Crus and Grands Crus, as well as several village appellations: Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Boudriotte, Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets, Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot, Chassagne Montrachet, Montrachet, Puligny Montrachet, Criots Bâtard Montrachet, Volnay…

  • Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Boudriotte: a distinctive terroir with Boudriotte's white and chalky soil, very different from the others, which justifies a single-plot cuvée. A generous and elegant fruitiness characterises this seductive wine, supported by a fine acidity that allows for optimal ageing.
  • Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets: a plot that stretches along the entire lieu-dit with different soils depending on altitude. Marl at the top to give body to the wines, white soil towards the valley to bring elegance and finesse!

Discover many wines from the Montrachet & Cie appellations on Vins et Millésimes! Some great estates are well worth a visit and a tasting: Albert Bichot, Domaine Leflaive, Heitz Lochardet, Pierre Morey and also Vincent Dancer are available for sale and 100% in stock!
