A domaine at the top of Saint Aubin: Jean Claude Bachelet
Domaine Jean Claude Bachelet is located in the village of Saint Aubin in Bourgogne and extends over a vineyard of 10 ha. Since the passing of their father Jean Claude in February 2020, his two sons Jean Baptiste and Benoît have been running Domaine Jean Claude Bachelet, in continuity with the family tradition, as they had joined the estate back in the early 2000s. Domaine Jean Claude Bachelet stands at the very top of the Saint Aubin appellation, but also in Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet, where Villages and Premiers Crus of exceptional quality are produced, as well as a prodigious Bienvenues Batard Montrachet as a Grand Cru.
The Jean Claude Bachelet estate is above all renowned for the production of its white Burgundies, although it also produces a few red Burgundies. The winemaking process is as natural as possible, and an 18-month aging on fine lees in French oak barrels (over 2 winters) is carried out, so that each wine evokes the terroir from which it originates, bringing the finesse, depth and structure required for a wine with aging potential. In the range offered, under the St Aubin appellation, 3 Premiers Crus stand out: the St Aubin 1er Cru le Charmois, the 1er Cru les Murgers des Dents de Chien and the 1er Cru En Remilly. In Puligny Montrachet, the village-level Les Aubues is a wine of substance, full-bodied, sapid, pure and concentrated with delicate brioche-like flavours, making it an excellent entry-level wine. The Puligny Montrachet les Encégnières (located just below the famous Burgundy Fine Wines Batard Montrachet and the Bienvenues Batard Montrachet) is pure, chiselled and lively, with notes of citron and grapefruit and a restrained power. The Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte is highly mineral (wet stone) and reveals itself to be powerful and intense, with a long finish carried by bitter notes of citrus zest. The Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Blanchot Dessus is one of the 2 flagship wines of the Jean Claude Bachelet estate and may require a longer wait (7 to 10 years recommended), as it needs time to integrate its oak aging in order to approach the class of a Fine Wine. In terms of finesse, it displays textbook fruitiness and an intense finish. Sought after by all lovers of great white wines, there is finally the estate Bachelet's sole Fine Wine: the Bienvenues Batard Montrachet. This great white Burgundy conveys with charm and precision the power and finesse of such a terroir. Often characterised by pastry-like and very exotic aromas in warm vintages, it only fully expresses itself after a minimum aging of 7 to 10 years, and then demonstrates all the greatness one is entitled to expect from the Fine Wines of Burgundy: breadth, power, stimulating acidity, and exceptional length with a saline finish. In terms of vintages, and generally speaking for white Burgundies, the most acclaimed are: 1989, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. As you will have gathered, the Jean Claude Bachelet estate is to be recommended without reservation to all lovers of great white Burgundies.
