The 1965 vintage remains in Burgundy a difficult and weak year, marked by a cold and rainy summer that severely compromised ripeness and encouraged rot. The reds (Pinot Noir) suffered heavily: diluted, lean and vegetal, they lack body and colour, with very rare exceptions in the Côte de Nuits. The whites (Chardonnay) are equally disappointing, diluted and without character, from Meursault to Chablis. The aging potential was very low, and the vast majority of cuvées have since disappeared or are well past any meaningful tasting. Sandwiched between the warm 1964 and the classic 1966, the 1965 remains a vintage best forgotten, of interest only to the most dedicated collector.
