The 1963 vintage in Burgundy remains a difficult and weak year, marked by a cold and rainy season that compromised ripening and encouraged rot in an already tested vineyard. The reds (Pinot Noir) suffered heavily: diluted, thin and vegetal, they lack both substance and colour, with the rarest of exceptions. The whites (Chardonnay) also fall well short, diluted and characterless, from Meursault to Chablis. The aging potential was virtually nil, and the vast majority of cuvées have today disappeared or are well past any point of interest for drinking. Sandwiched between the elegant 1962 and the warm 1964, the 1963 remains a vintage best forgotten, of anecdotal interest to collectors alone.
