The 1966 vintage in Burgundy affirmed itself as a very fine classical year, renowned for its balance and elegance, born of a healthy season that produced ripe grapes endowed with fine freshness. The reds (Pinot Noir) are its leading expressions: harmonious, refined and distinguished, endowed with measured structure and great length, with superb successes in the Côte de Nuits (Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis). The whites (Chardonnay) are balanced and flavourful, from Meursault to Puligny-Montrachet and Chablis. The ageing potential was real, carried by the balance of the vintage. Nearly sixty years on, the greatest perfectly cellared reds still offer splendid maturity, with the individual bottle becoming decisive. Between the difficult 1965 and the correct 1967, the 1966 ranks among the very finest classical years of the decade.
