History of Domaine Michel Gaunoux

The history of Domaine Michel Gaunoux begins in 1875, when Alexandre Gaunoux settled in Pommard and began making wines that quickly won over Côte de Beaune connoisseurs. His expertise was passed down through the generations, building the reputation of this family-run wine estate. In 1957, Michel Gaunoux took the helm of the property inherited from his grandfather. An exceptionally talented winemaker, he was regarded as one of the most accomplished winegrowers in all of Burgundy, capable of crafting wines of rare depth.

Michel Gaunoux’s untimely death in 1984 marked a turning point. His wife courageously took over the estate, without changing the philosophy that had made it renowned. Today, their children, Anne and Alexandre, carry on the family legacy, still guided by the same modesty and devotion to the terroir. The estate has retained Michel Gaunoux’s emblematic name in tribute to this exceptional winemaker. This family continuity, rare in the wine world, ensures an unwavering commitment to the ongoing pursuit of balance between power and elegance.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Michel Gaunoux

Domaine Michel Gaunoux spans approximately seven hectares across several prestigious Côte de Beaune appellations: Pommard, Beaune and Corton. This mosaic of terroirs is the estate’s hallmark and accounts for the diversity of its cuvées. In Pommard, the estate farms exceptional sites, including 0.69 hectares in the Rugiens-Bas climat, renowned for its iron-rich, clay soils that produce powerful, profound wines, and 1.75 hectares in Grands Epenots, a denser terroir yielding full-bodied, structured wines.

In Corton, the estate owns 0.63 hectares in the renowned Les Renardes lieu-dit, a Grand Cru of great distinction. Its vineyards also include plots in Pommard at Les Arvelets, Les Combes and Les Charmots, as well as vines in Beaune, notably in the Les Boucherottes and Les Epenottes Premier Crus and the village-level climats of Les Prevolles and Beaux Fougets. Finally, the estate farms a one-hectare plot in the Les Sorbins lieu-dit in Pommard. All these vines are tended by hand, with respect for the terroir and natural cycles, to preserve the authenticity of each cuvée.

Winemaking at Domaine Michel Gaunoux

Winemaking at Domaine Michel Gaunoux is rooted in a deep commitment to traditional methods. Harvested at full ripeness, the grapes are first carefully sorted and then completely destemmed, a technique dear to Michel Gaunoux. A long maceration follows—a slow infusion that gives the wines an aromatic complexity and tannic intensity often imitated but rarely equaled. This patient approach draws out the essence of Pinot Noir while preserving the finesse characteristic of the Côte de Beaune’s finest terroirs.

Another distinctive feature of the estate is its extended aging and cellaring. As at Burgundy’s most prestigious estates, the wines spend three vintages in the cellar before being offered for sale. This distinctive approach allows wine lovers to buy bottles that have already begun to mature and to compare several older vintages. The result is age-worthy fine wines—balanced, profound and made to last for decades—that faithfully reflect the ongoing pursuit of harmony between power and elegance.

The Cuvées of Domaine Michel Gaunoux

Bourgogne Rouge is the estate’s entry-level wine. From a one-hectare plot in the Les Sorbins lieu-dit in Pommard, this Pinot Noir charms with its generous fruit, red-fruit aromas and supple texture. Approachable when young yet offering good aging potential, it delivers an excellent balance of pleasure and authenticity, faithfully reflecting the house style.

The red Beaune Village is a blend of fruit from several plots in the Boucherottes, Epenottes, Prevolles and Beaux Fougets climats. It includes a substantial proportion of grapes from Premier Cru terroirs, giving it remarkable structure and elegance for its appellation. Supple and harmonious, it reveals notes of black fruit and a delicate underlying structure.

Pommard Premier Cru is a blend of fruit from the Arvelets, Combes and Charmots plots. True to the powerful, structured character of the Pommard appellation, it reveals a dense palate, firm tannins and aromas of ripe red and black fruit. Built for aging, it gains complexity and a velvety texture over years in the cellar.

Pommard Premier Cru Rugiens, from the Rugiens-Bas climat, is undoubtedly one of the estate’s most emblematic cuvées. Born of iron-rich, clay soils, this powerful, profound wine rewards patience: it fully reveals its true character after a decade of aging. The nose offers captivating aromas of cherries, peony and rose, while the palate is sensual, silky, fresh and exceptionally long.

Pommard Premier Cru Grands Epenots comes from denser, deeper soils that give rise to a robust, full-bodied and concentrated wine. More structured and powerful than the Rugiens, it combines impressive strength with genuine elegance. Built for very long aging, it develops remarkable aromatic complexity over time, bringing together black fruit, spices and mineral notes, and stands as one of Pommard’s great signature wines.

Corton Grand Cru Les Renardes is the pinnacle of the estate’s production. From a prestigious plot on the Corton hill, this Grand Cru has an exceptional presence, combining the power of its terroir with great textural finesse. Intense, profound and distinctive, it brings together density, freshness and an airy quality in a classic, timeless style. It is a majestic wine built for aging, capable of improving over many years and embodying all the nobility of Burgundy’s great wines.
