History of Domaine Michel Gaunoux

The history of Domaine Michel Gaunoux begins in 1875, when Alexandre Gaunoux settled in Pommard and began producing wines that quickly captivated connoisseurs of the Côte de Beaune. His expertise was passed down from generation to generation, steadily building the reputation of this family wine estate. In 1957, Michel Gaunoux took over the helm of the property inherited from his grandfather. A winemaker of exceptional talent, he was regarded as one of the most brilliant viticulturists in all of Burgundy, capable of crafting wines of rare depth.

The untimely passing of Michel Gaunoux in 1984 marked a turning point. His wife courageously assumed the direction of the domaine, without altering anything of the philosophy that had made it so renowned. Today, it is their children, Anne and Alexandre, who carry on the family legacy, always guided by the same spirit of humility and faithfulness to the terroir. The domaine has retained the emblematic name of Michel Gaunoux, as a tribute to this exceptional winemaker. This family continuity, rare in the world of wine, guarantees absolute consistency in the constant pursuit of balance between power and elegance.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Michel Gaunoux

Domaine Michel Gaunoux extends over approximately seven hectares spread across several prestigious appellations of the Côte de Beaune: Pommard, Beaune, and Corton. This mosaic of terroirs constitutes the signature of the domaine and explains the diversity of its cuvées. In Pommard, the domaine works exceptional lieux-dits, including 0.69 hectares on the Rugiens-Bas climat, renowned for its ferruginous and clay-rich soils that yield powerful and profound wines, as well as 1.75 hectares on Les Grands Epenots, a denser terroir producing fleshy and structured wines.

In Corton, the domaine owns 0.63 hectares in the celebrated lieu-dit Les Renardes, a Grand Cru of great nobility. The vineyard also includes plots in Pommard on Les Arvelets, Les Combes, and Les Charmots, as well as vines in Beaune, notably on the premiers crus Les Boucherottes and Les Epenottes, and on the village-level climates of Les Prevolles and Beaux Fougets. The domaine also cultivates a one-hectare plot in the lieu-dit Les Sorbins, in Pommard. All of these vines are tended by hand, with respect for the terroir and natural cycles, in order to preserve the authenticity of each cuvée.

Vinification at Domaine Michel Gaunoux

Vinification at Domaine Michel Gaunoux is rooted in a profound attachment to traditional methods. The grapes, harvested at full maturity, are first carefully sorted and then entirely destemmed — a technique dear to Michel Gaunoux. This is followed by a long maceration, a true slow infusion that bestows upon the wines an aromatic complexity and tannic intensity that are often imitated but rarely equalled. This patient approach allows for the extraction of the quintessence of Pinot Noir while preserving the finesse inherent to the great terroirs of the Côte de Beaune.

Another distinctive hallmark of the domaine lies in its élevage and extended cellaring. In the manner of Burgundy's most prestigious estates, the wines rest in the cellar for three vintages before being offered for sale. This unique philosophy allows enthusiasts to acquire bottles that are already partially evolved and to compare several older vintages. The result is a range of great wines built for ageing — balanced, profound, and crafted to endure for decades — faithful reflections of a constant pursuit of harmony between power and elegance.

The Cuvées of Domaine Michel Gaunoux

The Bourgogne Rouge represents the entry point to the domaine. Sourced from a one-hectare plot located in the lieu-dit Les Sorbins, in Pommard, this Pinot Noir wine captivates with its generous fruitiness, aromas of red fruits, and supple texture. Accessible when young while possessing fine ageing potential, it offers an excellent balance between pleasure and authenticity, a faithful reflection of the house style.

The Beaune Village rouge is born from a blend of several plots located on the climates of Les Boucherottes, Les Epenottes, Les Prevolles, and Beaux Fougets. This wine incorporates a fine proportion of grapes sourced from premier cru-classified terroirs, which endows it with remarkable structure and elegance for its appellation. Supple and harmonious, it reveals notes of black fruits and a delicate texture.

The Pommard 1er Cru is sourced from a blend of plots from Les Arvelets, Les Combes, and Les Charmots. Representative of the virile and full-bodied character of the Pommard appellation, it reveals a dense texture, firm tannins, and aromas of ripe red and black fruits. It is a wine built for ageing that gains in complexity and velvety smoothness over the years spent in the cellar.

The Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens, sourced from the Rugiens-Bas climat, is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic cuvées of the domaine. Born from ferruginous and clay-rich soils, this powerful and profound wine demands patience: it reveals its true nature fully only after a decade of ageing. On the nose, it offers captivating aromas of cherries, peony, and rose, while the palate proves sensual, silky, fresh, and of exceptional length.

The Pommard 1er Cru Grands Epenots flourishes on a denser and deeper terroir, giving rise to a robust, fleshy, and concentrated wine. More structured and fuller-bodied than the Rugiens, it combines impressive power with genuine elegance. A wine of very long ageing potential, it reveals with time a remarkable aromatic complexity, interweaving black fruits, spices, and mineral notes, and establishes itself as one of the great signatures of Pommard.

The Corton Grand Cru Les Renardes represents the pinnacle of the domaine's production. Sourced from a prestigious plot on the hill of Corton, this Grand Cru displays a superior profile, combining the power of the terroir with a great fineness of texture. Intense, profound, and distinguished, it brings together density, freshness, and aeration in a classic and timeless style. It is a majestic wine built for ageing, capable of improving over many years and of embodying the full nobility of the great wines of Burgundy.
