Frequently Asked Questions

Château Léoville Poyferré is classified as a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in the famous classification of Médoc wines established in 1855. This prestigious ranking places the estate among the elite of the great Bordeaux properties, alongside its neighbours Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton, who share with it the roots of the great historic Léoville vineyard. This recognition, granted as early as 1855, bears witness to the consistency and excellence of its wines across generations.

The Léoville Poyferré vineyard, covering 80 hectares, is planted with 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. This dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wines their characteristic tannic structure, their remarkable ageing potential and their complex aromas of dark fruits, cedar and spices. The blend has evolved over the decades to best reflect the assets of Saint-Julien's gravelly terroir.

The manual harvest, carried out in crates since 1994, undergoes a double sorting process: first by hand on sorting tables, then by optical sorting before the berries are crushed. Vatting is carried out by grape variety and by parcel in fifty-six stainless steel vats, twenty-seven of which have double walls allowing cold pre-fermentation maceration of seven days. The wines are then aged entirely for 18 to 20 months in barrels, with particular care given to the selection of casks to achieve a subtle and harmonious oak influence. Oenologist Michel Rolland has been working alongside the château's teams for vinification and blending since 1995.

Since 1920, the Société Civile des Domaines de Saint-Julien, owned by the Cuvelier family, has managed the estate. It is currently Didier Cuvelier who oversees its direction. This family longevity is a strength for the château: driven by a long-term vision, the Cuveliers have undertaken extensive renovations of the cellars and invested in quality parcel by parcel, making Léoville Poyferré one of the benchmark references of the Saint-Julien appellation.

The vineyard of Château Léoville Poyferré rests on a terroir of gravel, lean soils that provide a fine balance in nourishing the vine. These Garonne gravels, composed of pebbles, gravel, sand and clay, naturally drain excess water while accumulating solar heat. This "poor" soil forces the vine to drive its roots deep into the ground, concentrating aromas and conferring on the wines that taut minerality and elegance so characteristic of the Saint-Julien appellation.

Since 2016, Château Léoville Poyferré has been part of the Environmental Management System for Bordeaux wines, and the estate is proud to have obtained, for its entire vineyard, the High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3 certification starting from the 2017 vintage. This approach reflects the estate's commitment to preserving biodiversity, limiting chemical inputs, and passing on a living terroir to future generations — values increasingly sought by fine wine enthusiasts who are mindful of their environmental impact.

History of Château Léoville Poyferré

Château Léoville Poyferré originates from one of the greatest wine estates in the Médoc, the Léoville estate, founded in the 18th century. Initially known as Mont-Moytié, it was renamed Léoville by Alexandre de Gascq, a visionary in the art of vineyard management. In 1840, a portion of this vast vineyard was passed on to the daughter of the Marquis de Las Cases, who married Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferré de Cérès. It is thus that Château Léoville Poyferré officially took its name, becoming one of the three estates resulting from the division of the former Léoville, alongside Léoville Las Cases and Léoville Barton.

Despite the devastating epidemics of the late 19th century, such as phylloxera, the estate managed to survive thanks to the expertise of the Cuvelier family, who acquired it in 1920. With more than a century of experience in the wine trade, the Cuvelier family gradually modernised the vineyard, notably with the arrival of Didier Cuvelier in 1979, who initiated an extensive replanting and restructuring programme. Under his leadership, the estate underwent a true renaissance, further strengthened by the collaboration of renowned oenologist Michel Rolland from 1994 onwards.

In 2018, Sara Lecompte Cuvelier, niece of Didier Cuvelier, took the helm of the estate, ambitiously continuing the environmental commitment and viticultural excellence that have made Château Léoville Poyferré's reputation.

The 2009 vintage of Château Léoville Poyferré received an excellent score of 98/100 from Robert Parker, while 2016, 2000, 1990 and 2018 achieved 97/100, attesting to the richness and intensity of this great Saint-Julien.

Terroirs and Vines of Château Léoville Poyferré

The terroir of Saint-Julien is one of the most respected in the Médoc wine region. Located on the left bank of the Gironde, it benefits from a soil composed of deep gravel deposited by the river over the centuries. These layers of gravel ensure optimal drainage and allow the vine roots to penetrate deeply, drawing the essential nutrients needed to produce wines of exceptional complexity and richness.

The vineyard of Château Léoville Poyferré extends over 80 hectares, divided into various carefully selected plots. Planted with 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, it reflects the full diversity and harmony of Bordeaux grape varieties. These proportions highlight the perfect balance between the power of Cabernet Sauvignon and the roundness of Merlot, enhanced by the spicy touches of Petit Verdot and the finesse of Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 42 years, which yields concentrated, high-quality grapes capable of ageing for many years.

For several years, the estate has been committed to a strict environmental approach, adopting the Bordeaux Wine Environmental Management System (SME) and obtaining the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) level 3 certification from the 2017 vintage onwards. This approach aims to preserve biodiversity and promote sustainable viticulture, while respecting the unique terroir of Saint-Julien.

Vinification at Château Léoville Poyferré

Vinification at Château Léoville Poyferré is based on a combination of technological innovation and respect for tradition. The harvest is carried out by hand, ensuring precision and rigorous selection of the grapes. Before entering the vats, the bunches are sorted twice: first by hand, then using sophisticated optical sorting, guaranteeing irreproachable quality.

The estate features a modern vat room equipped with 57 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, including 27 double-walled tanks used for cold pre-fermentation maceration. This technique preserves the full purity and aromatic intensity of the fruit while maintaining its vibrant colour. To protect the wine as much as possible, Château Léoville Poyferré has been using since 2018 a bioprotection system based on non-Saccharomyces yeasts, which reduces the use of sulphur during the early stages of vinification.

The vinification process is then closely monitored by Isabelle Davin, the estate's oenologist, and Didier Thomann, the cellar master, who carefully adjust the temperature, extraction time and oxygen input in order to reveal the full potential of each cuvée. Malolactic fermentation takes place entirely in new French oak barrels, lending the wine a softer texture and great stability.

The wines are aged for 18 months, entirely in French oak barrels, of which 75% are new. This extended time in wood allows the wine to develop complex aromas while remaining harmonious, with a subtle and perfectly integrated oak. The final step before bottling consists of a traditional egg-white fining, which refines the tannins to give the wine its silky and elegant structure.

The Cuvées of Château Léoville Poyferré

Château Léoville Poyferré produces several cuvées that reflect the diversity and quality of its terroirs.

Château Léoville Poyferré

The estate's flagship wine, it is drawn from the finest plots of the Saint-Julien appellation. Voluptuous, powerful and full-bodied, it offers a broad aromatic palette with notes of dark fruits, spices and precious wood. This wine possesses an immense ageing potential, evolving towards more complex aromas over time. It is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives it a remarkable structure.

Château Moulin Riche

Cultivated over a 20-hectare plot, this wine stands out for its freshness and generosity. More approachable than its elder Léoville Poyferré, Château Moulin Riche reflects the diversity of Saint-Julien's terroirs. It is also characterised by fruity and spicy notes, with supple tannins and a beautiful lingering finish.

Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré

This second wine of the Château is designed to offer a glimpse of the estate's excellence while being more approachable in its youth. Supple and delicate, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré is distinguished by its roundness and silky tannins, making it perfect for earlier drinking.
