Wines from the Vacheron estate: buy at the best price

The Vacheron estate, based in Sancerre in the Loire, has been certified in biodynamics since 2006. While the Vacheron estate comprised just 1 ha of vines at the beginning of the 20th century, then 3 ha in the 1960s, it expanded considerably from 1965 onwards through the acquisition of numerous parcels, and now covers nearly 50 ha of vines (of which 37 ha are dedicated to the production of Loire white).

Under the leadership of Denis Vacheron, now supported by Jean-Dominique Vacheron (his son) and Jean-Laurent (his cousin), no fewer than 6 single-plot cuvées of white Sancerre are produced, highlighting a great variety of clay and limestone soils more or less marked by flint. The oldest (1997) and most emblematic cuvée of Domaine Vacheron is the Sancerre Les Romains, a lieu-dit dominated by flint, which can be defined as a wine with a structured and powerful profile, yet of a delicate austerity. The Vacheron Sancerre Guigne Chèvres comes from a poor, chalky, north-facing soil and yields a particularly precise, taut wine with a saline finish. The Vacheron Sancerre l'Enclos des Remparts comes from ungrafted vines enclosed within a small clos in Sancerre, from which it draws its sun-drenched power. The sauvignon blanc vines of Domaine Vacheron have an average age of 20 to 25 years, while the oldest pinot noir vines are nearly 60 years old. On the Loire red side, since 1995, the lieu-dit Belle Dame has each year produced a superb expression of Sancerre pinot noir on a flint soil. Since the 2009 vintage, two new white Sancerre cuvées on limestone have been added to complete the range of Domaine Vacheron wines: Le Paradis and Grands-Champs, joining the Chambrates cuvée already sourced from limestone terroirs. A rosé Sancerre, made from 100% pinot noir on flint limestone terroir, is also produced with great success by Domaine Vacheron: its pink robe opens on a delicate bouquet of redcurrants and rose. With an aromatic yet structured profile, the wine shows roundness, red fruit flavours and notes of white flowers. This Loire rosé from Vacheron pairs beautifully with spiced Asian-inspired cuisine, white meats, or grilled meats and fish cooked on the barbecue. The wines of Domaine Vacheron are well suited to ageing, but are also already very approachable in their youth.
