Pegau, flagship estate of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Domaine Pégau is located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is one of the flagship estates of this appellation. It was Laurence Féraud, daughter of Paul Féraud, who proposed to her parents in 1987 to create an estate named Pégau by separating 7 hectares of vineyard from the Domaine Féraud et Fils. Today, the estate has 21 hectares of vines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC and also 41 hectares of vineyard in the Côtes du Rhône AOC (but the Côtes du Rhône are produced under the Château Pégau label).
Domaine Pégau's wines are deep and generous, improving and refining with age. The grapes are generally harvested at high maturity and vinified in whole clusters. The Pégau Châteauneuf du Pape range includes 4 exceptional cuvées in red wines and 2 in white wines.
Domaine Pégau in the Rhône Valley produces a highly celebrated cuvée named Da Capo, which represents the pinnacle of their production from a selection of old vines, partly from the Crau sector. Da Capo is aged for 2 years in old foudres, yielding an exceptional wine, very dense and powerful, with persistent aromas of black fruits and licorice. Its rarity makes it a cult wine, sought after by connoisseurs worldwide. It is best to wait 10 to 15 years before drinking. The Pégau Châteauneuf du Pape cuvée Laurence represents a selection from a single foudre of 30 to 50 hl, from the Réservée cuvée (generally the finest). The aging is longer, at least 24 months; this cuvée generally does not undergo the closed period that other Pégau estate wines may experience, and it presents garrigue fragrances and delicate aromas of spiced stone fruits and dried meat. On the palate, the cuvée Laurence Pégau is dense, with magnificent flesh, great volume and beautiful elegance. The Pégau Châteauneuf cuvée Réservée red is more traditional and classic, with good aging potential, while in white, the Châteauneuf offers a dynamic palate and develops a lovely fennel aroma, saline and persistent on the palate. The quality of Domaine Pégau's wines is unquestionable, and this estate is therefore among the finest of the appellation. Care should be taken to wait a few years (7 to 12 years) before tasting the different cuvées, in order to enjoy them at their best.
