Wine 1985

The year 1985 is a very good vintage for Bordeaux wines. Admittedly the winter was glacial (-14°) but the weather conditions that followed were very favourable (September was the hottest and driest on record up to that point). 1985 produced beautiful red wines in Bordeaux, which were immediately approachable, and the Grands Crus Classés of Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien, which were able to harvest their Cabernets in October, produced great wines.

Pomerol produced a fine 1985 vintage, slightly more uneven in Saint-Émilion. Prices for 1985 wines were very high upon release, but later stabilized. The 1985 white Bordeaux wines were less successful, but there was a fine trio with Domaine de Chevalier, Château Haut-Brion and Château Laville Haut-Brion. In Sauternes, 1985 was less celebratory, as a dry October prevented the development of botrytis. The weather for 1985 Burgundy wines was the same as in the Bordeaux vineyards (frost at -24°C in the Côte de Nuits in January). However, thanks to a beautiful summer and a mild September, the quality of the 1985 vintage was excellent. A slight edge goes to the age-worthy red Burgundies, which are deeper, richer, riper, and well-balanced. Champagne produced a very good 1985 vintage (Louis Roederer, Laurent-Perrier) but in small quantities. As for Rhône Valley wines, the 1985 Côte-Rôtie and 1985 Hermitage are superb. Beautiful sweet wines and a magnificent Clos Rougeard in the 1985 Loire Valley. It was also a good vintage for Alsace wines and Alain Brumont’s Madiran wines (Montus, Bouscassé), which began making a name for themselves with this highly successful 1985 vintage, as in Jurançon.

Our advice for buying a 1985 wine

Are you looking to buy a 1985 wine but unsure which bottle to choose? We recommend several 1985 Grands Crus Classés in Bordeaux, such as Château Cos d’Estournel, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Léoville Barton, Château Léoville Las Cases, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, or Château Lynch-Bages, which rival the 1st Grands Crus Classés. For 1985 red Burgundy, the Musigny Grand Cru area produced superb, harmonious wines. A 1985 vintage Champagne, great wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, or even a Clos Rougeard (Les Poyeux)... there is plenty to choose from!
