Wine 1998

In Bordeaux, 1998 is the year of the Right Bank (Pomerol, Saint Emilion) and also of the Graves. The harvests were magnificent and of high quality (for Merlot), but in small quantities. In the Médoc, incessant rain from late September to 12 October prevented the Cabernet Sauvignon from reaching optimal ripeness (hard tannins). The 1998 Médoc Classified Growths are therefore less exceptional. In Sauternes 1998, the year is beautiful but the wines are less deep and luscious than in 1997. In Bourgogne, 1998 falls midway between 1996 and 1997, but with greater inconsistency. The weather was unpredictable, but the harvest was sunny. 1998 is rather successful in the Côte de Nuits. The wines show structure and flesh, but sometimes with slightly green tannins. The 1998 red wines are harmonious in Volnay in the Côte de Beaune: hail affected Meursault but also Chablis, requiring careful sorting.

Our advice for choosing a 1998 wine

The year 1998 is rather successful in Champagne, with the advantage going to a powerful and ripe Pinot Noir. A superb 1998 in the southern Rhône Valley with legendary red wines at Châteauneuf du Pape! Beautiful successes also in Côte Rotie 1998 and Hermitage 1998. The Loire Valley produces an average vintage, more successful in dry white wines than in sweet wines. In Alsace, botrytis developed well and beautiful 1998 Vendanges Tardives are still accessible. Languedoc Roussillon produced an exceptional 1998 vintage (which serves as a benchmark) and the red wines are superb. Excellent 1998 Cahors in the South West.

If you wish to invest in a bottle of 1998 wine, we recommend giving priority to 1998 Pomerol, 1998 Saint Emilion and 1998 Graves wines: L'Evangile 1998, Pétrus 1998, Angélus 1998, Cheval Blanc 1998, Pavie 1998, Tertre Roteboeuf 1998. On the Pessac Léognan side, Haut Brion 1998, Pape Clément 1998 or Mission Haut Brion 1998 are excellent, and in white Laville Haut Brion 1998 and Haut Brion Blanc produce 2 magnificent wines. The Médoc Crus Classés are dominated in 1998 Pauillac by Lafite Rothschild 1998 and Mouton Rothschild 1998 (extremely powerful and long-ageing) followed by Ducru Beaucaillou 1998, Léoville Barton 1998 and Léoville Las Cases 1998 in Saint Julien. The choice in red Burgundy can lean towards the Côte de Nuits or the Côte de Beaune in Volnay as the 1998 vintage merited waiting. The whites are successful in Chablis Grands Crus (excellent Chablis les Clos 1998 from François Raveneau). In the Rhône, superb 1998 Côte-Rotie from Guigal or 1998 Hermitage from Chave. Beaucastel 1998 in Châteauneuf du Pape is a benchmark. Château du Cèdre 1998 in Cahors in the South West. Finally, why not a great red wine from the Languedoc: Grange des Pères 1998, or an Alsace sweet wine (a truly grand Gewurztraminer SGN 1998 Quintessence from Léon Beyer!).
