Wine 1998

In Bordeaux, 1998 is the year of the Right Bank (Pomerol, Saint Emilion) and also of the Graves. The harvests were magnificent and of high quality (for Merlot), but in small quantities. In the Médoc, incessant rain from late September to 12 October prevented the Cabernet Sauvignon from reaching optimal ripeness (hard tannins). The 1998 Médoc Classified Growths are therefore less exceptional. In Sauternes 1998, the year is beautiful but the wines are less deep and luscious than in 1997. In Bourgogne, 1998 falls midway between 1996 and 1997, but with greater inconsistency. The weather was unpredictable, but the harvest was sunny. 1998 is rather successful in the Côte de Nuits. The wines show structure and flesh, but sometimes with slightly green tannins. The 1998 red wines are harmonious in Volnay in the Côte de Beaune: hail affected Meursault but also Chablis, requiring careful sorting.

If you’re looking to invest in a bottle of 1998 wine, we recommend prioritizing 1998 wines from Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, and Graves: L’Evangile 1998, Pétrus 1998, Angélus 1998, Cheval Blanc 1998, Pavie 1998, and Tertre Roteboeuf 1998. In Pessac Léognan, Haut Brion 1998, Pape Clément 1998, and Mission Haut Brion 1998 are excellent; among the whites, Laville Haut Brion 1998 and Haut Brion Blanc 1998 are two magnificent wines. Among the Médoc’s classified growths, Pauillac in 1998 is led by Lafite Rothschild 1998 and Mouton Rothschild 1998 (extremely powerful and built for long aging), followed by Ducru Beaucaillou 1998, Léoville Barton 1998, and Léoville Las Cases 1998 in Saint Julien. For red Burgundy, consider the Côte de Nuits or Volnay in the Côte de Beaune, as the 1998 vintage rewarded patience. The whites are successful among Chablis Grands Crus, notably the excellent 1998 Chablis Les Clos from Francois Raveneau. In the Rhône, look for superb 1998 Côte-Rotie from Guigal or 1998 Hermitage from Chave. Beaucastel 1998 is a benchmark in Châteauneuf du Pape. Château du Cèdre 1998 is an option from Cahors in the Southwest. Finally, why not choose a fine red wine from Languedoc, such as Grange des Pères 1998, or a sweet Alsace wine, such as the outstanding 1998 Gewurztraminer SGN Quintessence de Léon Beyer!
