Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Philippe Charlopin is one of the most recognizable names on the Côte de Nuits. Taken over in 1977 with just one and a half hectares of vines, the estate now spans 25 hectares spread across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune, and the Chablisien, and bottles nearly thirty-five appellations, including eight grand crus. Philippe Charlopin, supported for several years by his son Yann, has established himself as a master in the art of vinifying Burgundian Pinot Noir, with a generous and sun-drenched style marked by vibrant fruit, rich texture, and remarkable balance. The estate is farmed organically and has accumulated numerous distinctions in the leading guides.
In 2014, the Grands Crus of Domaine Philippe Charlopin stand out — notably the Chambertin with its delicate notes of blood orange, a very accomplished texture and superb construction that make it a complete wine, both powerful and very fine, very highly rated at 19/20 by the Bettane et Desseauve guide. The Mazis Chambertin 2014, sourced from the upper part of the cru, has a very fine tannin structure — an airy wine with mocha flavours. A wine for aesthetes, very mineral. As for the Echezeaux 2014, it is an earthy, powerful, muscular wine with a delicately saline finish. Domaine Philippe Charlopin also produces two 1er Crus: a red, the Gevrey Chambertin 1er cru Bel Air, which in 2013 reveals beautiful oak, a creamy texture and a very lovely breed — in short, a wine of great character; and a white, a Pernand Vergelesses 1er cru sous Frétilles, which excels in 2010 as a frank, nervous wine with well-integrated oak, refreshing and mineral, as one would expect. The Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru in 2010 is characterised by subtle toasted notes, taut, quite refined, with style and length. The ageing potential for this last wine is over 10 years. In red, the wines of Domaine Charlopin Parizot are predominantly described as concentrated and oaky, and the most celebrated vintages from the estate are 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002.
