Wines from Domaine Guffens Heynen: buy at the best price

Based in Sologny in Burgundy (near Vergisson), and led by Jean-Marie GUFFENS, the Guffens Heynen estate spans 5.3 ha of vines producing white Burgundy wines among the most renowned in the Mâconnais. The Pouilly-Fuissé appellation covers approximately 1 hectare, shared across 3 specific terroirs: la Roche, les Croux and les Crays. The Mâcon-Pierreclos appellation extends over a plot of approximately 3.3 hectares named Chavigne, situated on slopes of up to 40%, which therefore prohibit mechanical work. And finally, since 2008, Saint-Véran has 3 plots totalling 1 hectare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Domaine Guffens-Heynen is the fruit of an extraordinary story. It was in the mid-1970s that Maine and Jean-Marie Guffens-Heynen left their native Flanders to settle in Burgundy, with the intention of learning French and discovering wine. What was meant to be a one-year stay changed the course of their lives: in 1979, they acquired their first vineyard plots on the heights of Pierreclos, giving birth to Domaine Guffens-Heynen. Self-taught and passionate, they made up for their initial lack of experience with an artistic sensibility and an instinctive approach to the vine that would become their hallmark.

Among the flagship cuvées of Domaine Guffens-Heynen, three names stand out for lovers of great Burgundian whites. The Mâcon-Pierreclos Le Chavigne comes from a 4.5-hectare plot on steep hillsides, with vines aged 10 to 80 years facing south-west. The Mâcon-Pierreclos Tri de Chavigne is produced from the highest plots and from late harvests carried out in several successive passes, yielding a rich, concentrated and fresh wine. The Pouilly-Fuissé C.C., produced in very limited quantities, is considered one of the most sought-after chardonnays in all of Burgundy.

Jean-Marie Guffens's philosophy is built on minimal intervention at every stage. After manual harvesting at optimal ripeness, the grapes undergo gentle pressing using a vertical press, in order to extract the juice quickly and preserve its essence. In the cellar, fermentations are natural thanks to indigenous yeasts, the wines are aged on the lees, and they are not filtered. In the vineyard, the estate uses no insecticides or herbicides, and weeding is carried out mechanically to preserve the soils. This sober and precise approach lies at the heart of the estate's aromatic signature.

With a surface area of 5.65 hectares, the Guffens-Heynen estate vineyard spans three Burgundian appellations: Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé and Mâcon-Pierreclos. The Pouilly-Fuissé appellation covers approximately one hectare, spread across three specific terroirs — la Roche, les Croux and les Crays — while the Mâcon-Pierreclos extends over a plot of approximately 3.3 hectares named Chavigne, planted on slopes reaching 40%. Each appellation expresses a distinct facet of Jean-Marie Guffens's talent in the art of elevating chardonnay.

The wines of the Guffens-Heynen estate are designed to travel through time with grace. Their cuvées are crafted with long fermentations and masterful ageing, which gives them a chiselled structure — both rich and taut — capable of developing over many years. Enthusiasts who know how to be patient can allow these bottles to age for many years in order to draw out their very essence. The great cuvées such as the Pouilly-Fuissé or the premiers jus de Chavigne generally reveal their full complexity after five to ten years of cellaring, when tertiary aromas come to mingle with their characteristic minerality.

The rarity of Domaine Guffens-Heynen's wines stems from several structural factors. Production is deliberately kept low, with only 1,500 to 2,000 cases produced each year across all cuvées combined. Yields are intentionally modest, around 37 to 38 hectoliters per hectare, resulting in grapes with small clusters that are more concentrated and less diluted. Combined with a worldwide reputation and exceptional tasting scores, this limited production creates a permanent tension between supply and an international demand that far exceeds the quantities available.

History of Domaine Guffens-Heynen

The story of Domaine Guffens-Heynen began in 1976, when Jean-Marie and Maine Guffens-Heynen, a passionate Flemish couple, left their native Belgium to settle in Burgundy. Initially drawn there to learn French and explore the world of wine, they were quickly captivated by the charm of the Mâconnais. Jean-Marie, trained in theater and architecture, and Maine, a fine arts student, abandoned their artistic ambitions to devote themselves to viticulture. Jean-Marie enrolled at the viticulture school of Mâcon-Davayé, while Maine worked alongside local winemakers, learning the intricacies of the trade. In 1979, they acquired their first plots on the steep hillsides of Pierreclos, marking the beginning of an adventure that would go on to revolutionize the Mâconnais appellation.

From the very beginning, the Guffens distinguished themselves through their instinctive and creative approach. Their first cuvée, produced in 1980, attracted the attention of critics, most notably Robert Parker, who described Jean-Marie as a "genius." In 1990, the couple broadened their horizons by founding the négociant house Verget, allowing Jean-Marie to vinify grapes sourced from the finest terroirs of the Mâconnais, the Côte d'Or, and Chablis. Their reputation continued to grow, driven by a philosophy centered on quality, authenticity, and the pure expression of terroir. Today, Domaine Guffens-Heynen is recognized as one of the greatest ambassadors of chardonnay, and its wines — rare and precious — are an invitation to discover Burgundian excellence.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Guffens-Heynen

Domaine Guffens-Heynen spans 5.65 hectares, spread across the communes of Pierreclos, Vergisson, and Davayé, in the southern Mâconnais. The vines, ranging from 15 to 85 years of age, benefit from varied terroirs, from clay-limestone to calcareous and stony soils, offering a diverse palette of unique expressions for chardonnay. Each plot is carefully tended to preserve the quality of the grapes and respect the environment.

Mâcon-Pierreclos: This appellation covers 3.65 hectares, principally on the emblematic Chavigne plot. South-west facing, with slopes reaching up to 40%, these vines produce wines of great concentration, marked by a vibrant minerality.

Saint-Véran: Nearly one hectare is dedicated to this appellation, spread across three plots: Le Clos de Poncetys (limestone soil, south-east facing), Les Combes (deep clay soil, north facing), and Les Carettes (stony clay-limestone soil, north-east facing). These terroirs lend the wines remarkable freshness and complexity.

Pouilly-Fuissé: Also spanning one hectare, this appellation includes five distinct terroirs: Les Croux (with the Clos des Petits Croux), Sur la Roche, Les Crays, La Côte, and En Carementrant. Each plot, with its varied exposures and soils, brings a unique identity to the cuvées.

Viticulture at Domaine Guffens-Heynen is resolutely natural. Chemical treatments are banned, weeding is carried out mechanically, and tilling is done using a tracked vehicle to preserve the soil structure. Jean-Marie favors a minimalist approach, which he calls "non-cultivation," allowing the vine to express itself freely while keeping yields to around 38 hl/ha. The grapes are harvested by hand, often in several successive sortings, to ensure optimal ripeness, assessed by taste rather than analysis. This rigor in the vineyard is the key to the exceptional quality of the domaine's wines.

Vinification at Domaine Guffens-Heynen

Winemaking at Domaine Guffens-Heynen is a model of precision and simplicity, aimed at bringing out the full potential of the grapes. Jean-Marie Guffens, a true alchemist of chardonnay, favors a non-interventionist approach to allow the terroir to express itself fully. The grapes, carefully sorted, are gently pressed using a Coquard vertical press — a rare tool in Burgundy — allowing the free-run juice to be separated from the press juice for optimal purity. Fermentations are natural, carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged on lees with regular stirring to enrich their texture.

The wines are aged in barrels (approximately 25% new oak) for 8 months, then in concrete tanks for an equivalent period — a method that balances structure and freshness. No filtration is carried out before bottling, thereby preserving the integrity and richness of the aromas. This approach, combined with low yields and rigorous grape selection, produces wines of rare intensity, uniting power, minerality, and elegance. For enthusiasts wishing to purchase an exceptional white wine, the cuvées of Domaine Guffens-Heynen are an unmissable choice.
