1946

The 1946 vintage in France, post-Second World War, was marked by a promising hot and dry summer, but a cold and rainy September diluted the quality, with late harvests, low yields and hazards such as frosts, coulure and locust invasions. In Bordeaux, notable variability: the left bank (Médoc) with firm tannins and lively acidity (success at Latour and Mouton Rothschild), the right bank (Saint-Émilion, Pomerol) more fleshy (Cheval Blanc); modest and light Sauternes (Rieussec). In Burgundy, a calamitous August and rainy September yielded light reds and refreshing whites, often underestimated. For Champagne, fresh cuvées but without lasting complexity. A resilient vintage, rich in historical surprises for the patient enthusiast.
