The 1953 vintage in France proves to be globally excellent, marked by a mild spring, a cold and rainy summer causing some coulure, followed by a warm and dry August-September that favoured optimal ripening despite late rains. In Bordeaux, the Médoc reds (Haut-Brion, Figeac) shine for their elegance, fruitiness and ageing potential, while the Sauternes (Yquem) offer finesse and unctuousness; the dry whites sometimes lack acidity. In Burgundy, supple and ripe reds with great potential, charming but ephemeral whites. The Rhône Valley produces powerful wines, exceptional in the north. This vintage is a post-war classic, where most wines still express today a timeless finesse and a persistent fruitiness.
