Wine 1983

Marked by a very hot and humid summer in Bordeaux that led to some rot, the warm and dry months of September and October nonetheless allowed the production of a quality vintage. For the wines of Margaux, 1983 was an even better year than 1982, yielding great or very good wines. Fine successes in Grand Cru Classé wines of Pauillac and, to a lesser extent, in Saint Julien and Saint Estèphe. In white Bordeaux, a good vintage with notable successes. Excellent Sauternes and Barsac, with an exceptional Yquem, and very fine Climens, De Fargues, Gillette, Lafaurie-Peyraguey and Rieussec. In Burgundy, the 1983 vintage was complicated by difficult weather (hail in May and a hot, very humid summer, leading to rot). Some 1983 red Burgundy wines that were unpleasant when young (astringent) found their balance with age, and among white Burgundy wines, full-bodied wines with good acidity can show good form, as in the Chablis Grands Crus.

Our advice on buying a 1983 wine

To choose a 1983 wine, it is best to refer to the 1983 châteaux and wine estates mentioned above, such as Château Margaux 1983, Château Palmer 1983, Château Rauzan-Ségla 1983, or Château d'Issan 1983 for Margaux wines. But also Mouton Rothschild 1983, Lafite Rothschild 1983 or Pichon Comtesse 1983 for the grand crus of Pauillac. If you are looking to buy white wine, you could choose a bottle of Laville Haut-Brion 1983 or Chevalier 1983 for Bordeaux, or even d’Yquem 1983, Climens 1983, Fargues 1983, Rieussec 1983, etc. for sweet wines. For 1983 Champagne, any of the great houses will delight you. Finally, lovers of Rhône Valley wines will not want to miss out on a 1983 Hermitage.
