Located at the foot of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a few kilometres from Aix-en-Provence, Château Simone is one of the oldest wine estates in Provence, having belonged to the monks of the Grands-Carmes d'Aix, who built the château's cellars in the 15th and 16th centuries. Nicolas-Toussaint Rougier, from a family of winegrowers, purchased the 8 hectares of north-facing vineyards at the beginning of the 19th century. At the time, the estate produced white and red wines for a local clientele, particularly the bourgeoisie of Aix-en-Provence. Following the devastation of the vines by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century, Albert Rougier, a descendant, replanted a large part of the vineyard. In 1946, at the request of the Rougier family and in view of the geographical location of the vineyard, isolated by a forest, Château Simone was awarded the AOC Palette designation.
Today, Jean-François Rougier represents the seventh generation of owners at Château Simone. The vineyard extends over 25 hectares of vines resting on limestone soils. 13 hectares of vines are planted in red with notably Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cinsault. In white, there are 12 hectares of vines: Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Ugni Blanc, and Viognier. The north-facing exposure guarantees very gradual maturation. Some parcels are over a hundred years old. Harvesting is done manually and the estate is managed using organic farming methods. The estate produces approximately 100,000 bottles per year. Among the wines produced, the Simone Blanc cuvée, made from a blend of Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Ugni Blanc, and Bourboulenc, has a beautiful golden robe. The nose is floral with aromas of linden and honey, and dried fruits as it ages. On the palate, you find beautiful freshness that offers great subtlety and much panache as it ages. In red, the Simone cuvée made from Cinsault, Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, and Syrah offers a powerful and structured nose with beautiful aromas of ripe fruits. The robe is dark ruby. On the palate, you can distinguish notes of red fruits of beautiful complexity. The white wines, particularly thanks to their north-facing orientation, are endowed with beautiful acidity and are capable of aging for a very long time; they truly begin to become interesting after about twenty years in the cellar. The whites are indeed significantly more renowned than the reds.
