The wines of Château de Pibarnon in Bandol: an iconic estate of Provence

Wines from Château de Pibarnon: purchase at the best price

Henri de Saint Victor created the Château de PIBARNON in 1978, and within a few decades established it among the iconic properties of Bandol (alongside Tempier and Pradeaux). His son Éric has been at the helm of the Pibarnon estate since 2000 and cultivates 52 ha of vines (47 ha of Provence red + 5 ha of Provence white) on the limestone terroirs of La Cadière d'Azur.

Pibarnon 2016 Rosé

Château de Pibarnon is located at 300 m altitude, in a vast amphitheatre facing the sea, and produces 5 cuvées, of which 2 are Bandol rouge: the Domaine Pibarnon cuvée, composed of 92% Mourvèdre and 8% Grenache, built for ageing, and the cuvée Les Restanques du Château de Pibarnon, more approachable young, sourced from young vines with 70% Mourvèdre and 30% Grenache. 2 other Bandol rosé cuvées are offered at Château de Pibarnon: the Domaine Pibarnon rosé is composed of 65% Mourvèdre and 35% Cinsault, and is released at the beginning of the summer following the vintage. It is a fresh rosé intended to be enjoyed within 2 to 4 years. Domaine Pibarnon decided in 2014 to produce an additional premium, age-worthy rosé cuvée called Nuances de Pibarnon, which is kept in the cellar and only released the following winter. The Nuances cuvée is noticeably more concentrated and structured, and is composed of 95% Mourvèdre. Yields are deliberately limited here to 35 hl/ha, and beneath its apparent finesse, this noble rosé reveals pronounced notes of red fruits, liquorice and spices such as saffron. On the palate, its structure is broad, ample, crunchy and powerful all at once, with a very long, sapid finish. The Bandol blanc of Château Pibarnon is composed of 55% Clairette and 30% Bourboulenc + 15% various grape varieties such as Ugni blanc and Marsanne. This singular, southern white wine rivals in freshness with certain wines from further north, thanks to elegant bitter notes and above all a sapid finish, linked to the soil and its slow ripening on the north-facing slope. Its structure surprises with its volume, yet its floral and delicate elegance renders it precise and pure, crystalline, ideal with fish or langoustines. Château de Pibarnon, renowned for its reds which are excellent ambassadors of Bandol wines and their ageing potential, has thus regained its finest level. It must be said that by selecting plots at the heart of its terroir, Éric de Saint Victor has succeeded in giving body and breadth to his wines of silky and concentrated character, with a highly civilised balance between oak and fruit expression. Time pays tribute to them in the great old vintages of 1985, 1990, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2010. Pibarnon remains a great and renowned Bandol estate, to be discovered or rediscovered for its exceptional age-worthy wines.
