Guillaume OVERNOY succeeded his father Jean Louis at the family estate in 2013, when he was only 19 years old. The estate had existed since 1982 as a mixed farming operation, located in the village of Orbagna, in the southern Revermont. Little by little, his father Jean Louis had dedicated Domaine Overnoy to viticulture by acquiring several plots. It is no simple matter in the Jura to bear the same family name as his great-uncle Pierre Overnoy, the legendary winemaker from Pupillin; but Guillaume Overnoy is now striving to make a name for himself, and one must acknowledge that he is succeeding, with considerable talent.

The TOP winemakers of Jura

Domaine Guillaume Overnoy covers almost 6 hectares of vineyards, which Guillaume Overnoy has converted to organic farming since joining the estate. The vineyards are planted entirely with Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir, Trousseau and Poulsard. Guillaume has gradually begun producing numerous single-parcel cuvées that reflect the full diversity of the estate’s terroirs. Guillaume Overnoy also excels at winemaking, and critics soon singled out his wines for their purity, fruit, energy and tension. In the cellar, Guillaume uses small amounts of sulfur, fermentation is started by indigenous yeasts, and the wines spend extended periods aging in barrels. The range is now quite comprehensive. Among the Côtes du Jura wines, Guillaume Overnoy’s topped-up Savagnin stands out: aged for 38 months in the cellar, it reveals subtle aromas of citrus and stone. The palate is finely etched, precise and direct, while retaining admirable substance. A very beautiful wine… Guillaume Overnoy’s traditional-style Savagnin, meanwhile, is aged under a veil of yeast for four years. The yeast shapes this Savagnin’s astonishing aromatic richness, accompanied by a superb mineral backbone. The wine offers aromas of dried fruit and walnuts, with gentle spice notes. A fine wine for the table. Also among the Jura whites, Guillaume Overnoy’s Chardonnay Vigne Derrière is an excellent single-parcel selection aged for an extended period in oak (22 months), with plenty of depth, minerality and finesse. It can be cellared for at least 10 years. Guillaume Overnoy’s Chardonnay Sous Voile Typé was aged under a veil of yeast for 30 months, and comes from clay and marl soils. On the palate, it shows impressive aromatic power alongside finesse and subtlety, with aromas of almond, hazelnut and honey. With its long finish, this wine can be kept for at least 10 to 12 years and pairs beautifully with pressed cheeses and creamy dishes. Guillaume Overnoy has also tried his hand at orange wines, made through skin contact, with Chardonnay Au Vignet: a balanced wine without excess, and another success for the estate. Finally, among the Jura reds, the “Rougissime” cuvée is a blend of 70% Trousseau, 15% Pinot Noir and 15% Poulsard. An utterly delicious wine, it has an exuberant bouquet of mixed red berries with a slight hint of pepper. On the palate, it is delicate and smooth yet substantial—a pure delight. Highly recommended.
