History

The origins of this estate date back to the 12th century, with the first part of the manor house built in the 14th century. In 1877, Zaccharie Geoffray, a farmer near Villefranche-sur-Saône, bought Château Thivin at auction, with just under two hectares of vines. From 1894 onwards, it was mainly his son Claude who expanded the estate considerably. Another Claude, the son of the first, took up the torch and, alongside his wife Yvonne, invested a great deal of time and effort in raising the profile of the Côte de Brouilly and Beaujolais as a whole. Leaving no descendants, Claude and Yvonne entrusted the estate to their nephew, also named Claude, who in turn passed it on to his son Claude-Edouard in 2007, who continues the tradition today.

The estate took a decisive turn with the arrival of Claude Thivin in 1953. Under his leadership, the Côte de Brouilly appellation underwent a spectacular revival. Sound viticultural practices and prolonged ageing have produced harmonious, tasty, delicious vintages that are both young and ideal for laying down. A signature recognised by discerning wine-lovers.

Terroir and climate

Château Thivin is located on the slopes of Mont Brouilly, in the commune of Odenas, in the heart of the Beaujolais wine-growing region. The property enjoys a privileged location, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills and Beaujolais vineyards. The estate covers around 26 hectares, mainly planted with the Gamay grape variety, which is emblematic of the Beaujolais region. The vines are located on the steep slopes of Mont Brouilly, benefiting from ideal exposure to the sun. The soils are composed of pink granite, giving the wines a certain minerality and a characteristic structure.

Vines, grape varieties, viticulture and vinification

26 hectares of Gamay, the emblematic grape variety of the Beaujolais region, most of them in the Brouilly appellation, to produce outstanding vintages using very specific techniques. The estate attaches great importance to environmentally-friendly viticulture. The vines are worked sustainably, and the estate avoids excessive use of chemicals, favouring a more natural approach to vine-growing.

Vinification at Château Thivin is traditional, bringing out the natural characteristics of the Gamay grape. The grapes are harvested by hand, and part of the vinification is done in whole bunches, plot by plot, with ageing adapted to each plot, to accentuate the freshness and expression of the fruit.

The wines of the estate

Château Thivin is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable estates in the entire region, thanks to its terroir-driven cuvées that are at once luscious, full-bodied and endowed with an extremely fine grain of tannin. Renowned for their elegance, finesse and ability to age well, the cuvées often express aromas of red fruit, floral notes and a fine minerality.

In short, Château Thivin is an emblematic estate in the Beaujolais region, renowned for its quality wines, mainly from the Brouilly appellation. Its commitment to tradition, sustainability and the preservation of the terroir has helped to make this estate a popular destination for wine lovers.
