History

The origins of this property date back to the 12th century, with the first part of the manor house built in the 14th century. In 1877, Zaccharie Geoffray, a farmer near Villefranche-sur-Saône, acquired Château Thivin at auction, with just under two hectares of vines. It was especially his son Claude who, from 1894 onwards, considerably expanded the estate. Another Claude, son of the first, took up the torch and invested greatly in the recognition of Côte de Brouilly and Beaujolais as a whole, alongside his wife Yvonne. Leaving no descendants, Claude and Yvonne entrusted the estate to their nephew, also named Claude, who in turn passed it on to his son Claude-Edouard in 2007, who continues the tradition today.

The estate took a decisive turn with the arrival of Claude Thivin in 1953. Under his leadership, the Côte de Brouilly appellation experienced a spectacular renewal. Healthy cultivation practices and prolonged aging gave birth to harmonious, gourmet, delicious cuvées, both young and suitable for aging. A signature recognized by discerning enthusiasts.

Terroir and Climate 

Château Thivin is located on the flank of Mont Brouilly, in the commune of Odenas, in the heart of the Beaujolais wine region. The property benefits from a privileged location, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and Beaujolais vineyards.

The estate extends over approximately 26 hectares, primarily planted with the Gamay grape variety, which is emblematic of the Beaujolais region. The vines are situated on the steep slopes of Mont Brouilly, thus benefiting from ideal sun exposure. The soils are composed of pink granite, imparting a certain minerality and characteristic structure to the wines.

Vines, grape variety, viticulture and winemaking

26 hectares of Gamay, the emblematic grape variety of Beaujolais, most in the Brouilly appellation to produce formidable cuvées, thanks to very precise techniques. 

The estate places great importance on environmentally respectful viticulture. The vines are worked sustainably, and the estate avoids excessive use of chemicals, thus favoring a more natural approach to vine cultivation.

Winemaking at Château Thivin is traditional, highlighting the natural characteristics of Gamay. The grapes are hand-harvested, and part of the vinification is done with whole clusters, parcel by parcel, with aging adapted to each of them, to accentuate the freshness and expression of the fruit.

The estate's wines

Château Thivin unquestionably stands out as one of the most remarkable estates in the entire region, thanks to its terroir cuvées that are both gourmet, full-bodied and endowed with an extremely fine tannin grain. Renowned for their elegance, finesse and ability to age well, the cuvées often express aromas of red fruits, floral notes and beautiful minerality.
