Domaine Marcel Lapierre is located in Villié-Morgon at the heart of Beaujolais, and this fine family estate was passed on to the 3rd generation following the death of Marcel Lapierre in 2010. It is Camille and Mathieu Lapierre who now lead Domaine Marcel Lapierre, which was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture as early as 1981. The vineyard covers 16 hectares, including 2 hectares on the famous Côte de Py, and Domaine Marcel Lapierre possesses a very fine collection of old vines of around 70 years. Its history, deeply rooted in tradition, and its respect for nature make its wines essential for lovers of authentic cuvées.

History of Domaine Marcel Lapierre

Domaine Marcel Lapierre was founded in 1909 by Michel Lapierre, a Beaujolais winegrower who settled in Villié-Morgon. His son, Camille Lapierre, continued the family venture after World War II. Camille soon established his forward-thinking vision by selling his wine directly in bottles starting in the 1950s—a revolutionary idea at the time.

In 1973, Marcel Lapierre, Camille’s son, took the reins of the estate and marked a decisive turning point. Inspired by Jules Chauvet, a renowned researcher and winemaker, Marcel adopted a radically different approach: he decided to grow his vines without chemical fertilizers and to stop adding sulfur during winemaking. This then-unconventional approach quickly established him as a pioneer of "natural" wines, while also adhering to biodynamic methods.

Marcel’s death in 2010 did not extinguish the spirit of the estate. Today, his children, Mathieu and Camille, carry on the family tradition with the same passion and commitment to organic farming and winemaking without additives. In doing so, they preserve the legacy of an estate that has profoundly shaped the history of Beaujolais and natural wines in France.

Terroirs and Vineyards of Domaine Marcel Lapierre

Domaine Marcel Lapierre’s 18 hectares lie primarily within the Morgon appellation, one of the most prestigious crus of Beaujolais. This terroir is unique in both its geological richness and its history. The region’s predominantly granitic, acidic soils are particularly well suited to Gamay noir à jus blanc, which is carefully cultivated at the estate.

The estate’s vines grow in poor, well-drained soils, allowing Gamay to express its full finesse and aromatic concentration. Among its emblematic plots, the Côte du Py stands out for its unique geological formation of “blue stones,” a rich, uniform granite. This terroir gives the wines incomparable intensity and aromatic complexity.

Since 1981, every plot on the estate has been farmed organically—an approach that was ahead of its time. The Lapierre family respects the life of the soil, avoiding chemical herbicides and favoring composting and shallow tillage. This care for the soil is reflected in the exceptional quality of the grapes, which are always harvested by hand and meticulously sorted.

Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Lapierre

Winemaking at Domaine Marcel Lapierre is an art that respects both tradition and nature. The carefully hand-harvested grapes are quickly taken to the winery to prevent any deterioration. Carbonic maceration, the method used here, is a hallmark of Beaujolais. It keeps whole grape clusters in a CO2-saturated environment, encouraging the extraction of aromas even before alcoholic fermentation begins. Particularly gentle on the fruit’s primary aromas, this technique produces fruity, fresh wines with fine tannins.

The estate also stands out for its refusal to use commercial yeasts or chemical additives during fermentation. Every cuvée is made with indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grape clusters. This choice enhances the expression of the terroir and ensures authentic wines without artifice.

Another distinctive feature of Domaine Lapierre is the near-total absence of sulfur during winemaking. The wines are closely monitored through regular microbiological analyses, and intervention is limited to physical techniques such as pump-overs and punch-downs to preserve the purity of the juice.

The Cuvées of Domaine Marcel Lapierre

Domaine Marcel Lapierre offers a varied range of cuvées, each reflecting the richness of its terroir and the purity of its winemaking.

Morgon: This emblematic estate cuvée, sourced from some of Morgon’s finest plots, offers dominant aromas of cherry, violet and licorice. Domaine Lapierre’s Morgon has a fine tannic structure and the potential to age for around ten years. It captures the essence of the Morgon cru, combining finesse and complexity.

Marcel Lapierre cuvée: Made only in exceptional years, this cuvée pays tribute to Marcel Lapierre. Sourced from the estate’s oldest vines on the Côte du Py and Le Douby, it expresses intense aromas of black cherry and licorice. It is a rare cuvée produced in very small quantities.

Camille cuvée: Named in honor of Camille Lapierre, this cuvée comes from old vines on the Côte du Py, where the soils are poor and stony. It is distinguished by a long maceration and aging in tapered wooden vats, yielding subtle aromas of fresh red fruit and a long finish.

Beaujolais: Made using carbonic maceration, this wine offers a lighter, fruitier expression of Gamay, with notes of raspberry and a hint of spice. It is an ideal introduction to the estate’s approach, combining finesse with generous fruit.

Raisins Gaulois: The quintessential easy-drinking wine, this cuvée is made from the estate’s young vines. With its exuberant red-fruit aromas and thirst-quenching freshness, it is an invitation to share a glass, while remaining true to the principles of natural wine.

Over the years, Domaine Marcel Lapierre has produced remarkable vintages that have left their mark on the history of Morgon wines. Notable years include 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020…
