Jean-Marc Burgaud established his estate in 1989 in Villiers-Morgon, after training as a winemaker in Burgundy. In 1992, he took over the vines in the Côte de Py sector, previously farmed by his father-in-law. Treatments are predominantly copper- and sulphur-based, though organic certification is not claimed. Indeed, Jean-Marc Burgaud prefers to retain some flexibility in the event of heavy disease pressure, as was the case in 2012 and 2013.
Now established on nearly 19 hectares of vineyard, Jean-Marc Burgaud was largely inspired by his time in Burgundy for the parcel-by-parcel work of the vines (the famous Burgundy climats), leading to the creation of different cuvées (Les Charmes, Grands Cras, Côte de Py, Javernières, James…). Jean-Marc Burgaud also imported from his time in Burgundy a refined technical approach to vinification and aging of his wines (partial destemming and longer aging time depending on the vintage profile). Such methods, adapted to the Gamay grape variety, aim to seek ever greater precision, and it must be said that the entire range of his wines is superb. Critics have widely recognized Jean-Marc Burgaud's talent with highly rated wines, and even though the majority of the parcels of Domaine Jean Marc Burgaud are located on the famous Côte de Py of Morgon, they are nevertheless well differentiated. The range of wines offered reflects a consistency that begins with light wines to be drunk on the fruit: the Beaujolais Village (on granitic terroirs) and the Régnié. Then come wines that are still fruity, but for medium aging: the Burgaud Morgon les Charmes and the Morgon Grands Cras de Burgaud cuvée, with a more clayey terroir. The Burgaud Morgon Côte de Py offers a more substantial and serious profile, with delicate aromas of peony and Burlat cherry, while maintaining enhanced minerality. The Burgaud Morgon Javernières, isolated as a cuvée since 2007, comes from a small parcel of fifty-year-old vines, which give it finesse and elegance. Finally, the Jean Marc Burgaud Morgon James cuvée is the archetype of a deep, powerful and structured wine, which deserves to be waited for between 5 and 10 years depending on the vintage. A rare white Beaujolais cuvée is also offered - made from Chardonnay replanted on an old and tiny (0.5 ha) century-old parcel of gamay - but barely more than 1,300 bottles are produced each year. Domaine Jean Marc Burgaud is at the peak of its art, and proves that the crus of Beaujolais can be remarkable when wine production is entrusted to artists.
