History of Domaine Georges Descombes

From a family of winemakers established for several generations in Beaujolais, Georges Descombes worked from adolescence alongside his father in the vines, while also holding a position at a local bottling company. That role proved decisive: moving from cellar to cellar, he tasted the wines of a great many estates in the region. The revelation came at Marcel Lapierre's, one of the pioneers of natural wine: overwhelmed by the purity and elegance of those bottles, the young man decided on the spot that he would one day make wines of that caliber.

He took over the seventeen-hectare family estate in the late 1980s and devoted himself to it entirely from 1993. While his father worked in a traditional manner, Georges pushed the approach much further: a shift to organic viticulture, certified for many years by Ecocert, the total elimination of inputs and cellar interventions. He thus joined the circle of winemakers who are heirs to Jules Chauvet, alongside Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Guy Breton, of whom he is often presented as the fifth musketeer. Discreet but essential, he now ranks among the most sought-after producers of the appellation, regularly distinguished by the Revue du vin de France, which salutes his evolution toward ever greater purity and frankness without ever renouncing his minimally interventionist philosophy.

Terroirs and Vines of Domaine Georges Descombes

The vineyard extends over approximately fifteen hectares spread across several crus in the northern Beaujolais. Morgon forms its heart, with around seven hectares planted on soils of decomposed schist that local winemakers call roche pourrie, rich in iron and manganese oxides, which give this cru its particularly distinctive structure and ageing potential. Then come Brouilly, Régnié and Chiroubles, followed by plots in Fleurie, notably on the Grille-Midi climat, and in Saint-Amour, complemented by vines in Beaujolais-Villages and Beaujolais.

The soils are predominantly granitic and schistose, with varied exposures and altitudes that give each cru its personality: lightness and brilliance on Brouilly, power and concentration on Régnié, airy finesse on Chiroubles, silky indulgence on Morgon. The average age of the vines destined for the Vieilles Vignes cuvées reaches seventy years, with certain plots well exceeding that threshold. Black gamay dominates the encépagement overwhelmingly, complemented by a small area of chardonnay. Yields are deliberately limited, no synthetic chemical products are used and work in the vineyard remains entirely manual, with severe pruning and rigorous shoot removal that guarantee perfectly healthy grapes at harvest.

Vinifications at Domaine Georges Descombes

The method never varies, whatever the cru. The harvests are manual and the grapes brought in as whole bunches in small crates to avoid any crushing. Vinification is carried out by full carbonic maceration, in keeping with the Beaujolais tradition as reinterpreted by the school of Jules Chauvet, with deliberately long vatting periods. Fermentations start spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts alone, without chaptalization, without added yeasts and without any addition of sulphur during vinification.

Ageing then distinguishes the two families of cuvées. The wines from the youngest vines rest in concrete tanks, which preserves their fruit brightness and immediate drinkability. The Vieilles Vignes cuvées, on the other hand, spend time in used barrels for a period of up to two years, gaining in depth, texture and ageing potential. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, and sulphur, when used, is limited to a tiny dose at bottling. The result is bottles of remarkable clarity and fruit purity, endowed with an ageing potential that is often underestimated for the region.

The Cuvées of Domaine Georges Descombes

The Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages open the range with immediately seductive, crunchy and easy-drinking reds, where red fruit bursts forth without the slightest artifice. The Beaujolais Blanc, made from certified organic chardonnay, offers a nose of white flowers nuanced by exotic fruits and candied lemon, a round and very fruity palate, and a mineral, fresh finish: a rarity in a range almost entirely dedicated to gamay. The estate also produces, under the Vin de France label, a Macération Chardonnay crafted with extended skin contact, a textured and original orange wine that bears witness to the winemaker's constant curiosity.

The Brouilly Vieilles Vignes is one of the most iconic cuvées of the estate. It stands out for its brilliant and luminous fruit, a rich aromatic bouquet blending red fruits, black fruits and spices, and a palate that is at once refined, fresh and indulgent, lifted by a lovely touch of acidity. Light in its youth, it gains considerable depth after a few years. The Régnié Vieilles Vignes adopts a more powerful and more concentrated register, developing notes of black fruit and a firm structure that make it one of the most full-bodied wines in the range, capable of holding for seven to ten years in the cellar.

The Chiroubles Vieilles Vignes, born from the highest-altitude hillsides of Beaujolais, plays on finesse and freshness with aromas of small crunchy berries, a beautiful structure and a full palate, enjoyable from its youth yet capable of ageing gracefully. The Fleurie Vieilles Vignes, sourced in particular from the Grille-Midi climat, is considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the finest expressions of the cru across all producers: a delicate colour, floral perfumes of iris and violet, a silky texture and remarkable length. The Saint-Amour Vieilles Vignes, more confidential, proves intense, pure and fresh, with abundant fruit and an assertive character that pairs it ideally with a fine charcuterie board or a red meat dish.

Morgon remains the historic stronghold of the estate. The Morgon, in its tank-aged version, is the most gliding and most seductive wine of the house, a juicy yet serious gamay that literally crunches with fruit. The Morgon Vieilles Vignes, aged in used barrels, takes a step further with its rich aromatic palette of blackberry, blackcurrant and violet, its silky and enveloping texture and its impressive persistence: it is a wine of pleasure as much as a wine for ageing, which improves over ten to fifteen years. Finally, the Vermont cuvée, named after the hamlet where the house and cellars are located, is the rarest and most sought-after bottle of the estate, produced only in exceptional vintages. Chiselled, dense and of a striking precision, it represents the quintessence of Georges Descombes's work and the culmination of more than thirty years of faithfulness to natural wine.
