The Georges Descombes estate wines on Morgon: a sure value in Beaujolais

Georges Descombes estate wines: buy at the best price

The Georges DESCOMBES estate, located in Villié-Morgon, is one of the sure values of Beaujolais. In 1987, Georges DESCOMBES was the only child who wished to take over the family estate, and it was with his 1st harvest and his first vintage that he took over the estate in his own name. From 1993 onwards, he decided to devote himself full-time to the Descombes estate, whose vineyard now covers 17 ha of vines, including 7 ha under AOC Morgon.

The Domaine Georges Descombes also has beautiful plots in the appellations Brouilly, Chiroubles, Régnié and Beaujolais Village + Beaujolais. Domaine Georges Descombes thus offers a beautiful range of wines, each expressing the character of its respective terroir. The purity and directness of flavour of the various wines produced are a true reflection of Domaine Georges Descombes, whose vines are most often tended according to organic principles. On the very steep plots where no ploughing is possible, the minimum amount of herbicide is used. To better preserve the freshness and delicacy of the fruit, as well as the identity and minerality of the terroir, the wines are vinified in concrete, stainless steel or epoxy tanks (taste-neutral materials). The wine is then aged for 8 to 9 months in barrels ranging from 2 to 10 years old for the Vieilles Vignes cuvées. The other cuvées from Domaine Georges Descombes are aged in concrete tanks. It is worth noting that the Vieilles Vignes cuvées are generally released 1 year after those of the majority of Morgon producers. Georges Descombes explains that he prefers to wait until the wines are fully stabilised before releasing them from the domaine, which will certainly satisfy impatient tasters, who will thus be spared the shock of bottling, with wines that can sometimes be tricky to enjoy during the first few months. Among the wines offered by Domaine Georges Descombes, the Brouilly Vieilles Vignes is the archetype of pleasurable Beaujolais, sourced from a selection of the finest old vines from Domaine Descombes, and whose longer ageing in wooden containers gives it a very silky tannin texture. The nose is nicely fruity, with beautiful notes of black and red fruits (raspberry, morello cherry), and on the palate the texture is very silky, indulgent and beautifully fresh. The Fleurie Vieilles Vignes cuvée from Domaine Georges Descombes reveals a lovely ruby colour from which escapes a very delicate aromatic bouquet, with notes of red and black fruits, floral touches, and on the palate a supple structure of fine elegance with a savoury finish. The Morgon Vieilles Vignes cuvée from Domaine Descombes is situated almost entirely within the highly regarded "Corcellette" climat of the Morgon appellation, with plots located rather high up on this climat, whose relative altitude allows for an added freshness, invaluable in today's sunny vintages. This superb wine is marked by the generosity of its fruity aromas, its satiny texture on the palate and a beautiful mineral backbone. This emblematic cuvée from Domaine Georges Descombes offers a deep and intense nose with beautiful notes of cherry and strawberry, developing on the palate a fine acidity that perfectly balances the intensity of the fruit, and which prolongs the pleasure through its structure and elegance. The wine can be enjoyed over 7 to 8 years without any concern, as the class and ageing potential of this signature cuvée from the domaine are well established.
